(ESP-ENG) Comienzo extraño en Australia.

Y llegó el fin de semana que muchos estábamos esperando, el comienzo de la Fórmula 1, uno que estaba lleno de expectativas y ansiedades por cómo iban a ser la cosas a raíz de tantos cambios que hay tanto en motores como en reglamento. Particularmente mis expectativas eran un poco bajas después de lo visto en la pretemporada y prácticas y es que los nuevos motores parecen que no convencen a nadie ni a los propios pilotos quienes han sido muy directos y frontales expresando sus quejas por la forma en cómo estos se desempeñan en pista y por su rendimiento. Pero como casi siempre sucede los comienzos no son sencillos y tienden a pasar cosas; bajo este pensamiento me dispuse a ver el gran premio.
And the weekend many of us had been waiting for finally arrived: the start of Formula 1. It was a weekend filled with anticipation and anxiety about how things would unfold, given the numerous changes to both the engines and the regulations. My expectations were somewhat low, particularly after what I'd seen in preseason testing and practice. The new engines didn't seem to convince anyone, not even the drivers themselves, who had been very direct and outspoken in expressing their complaints about their performance on the track. But, as is almost always the case, beginnings are never easy, and things tend to happen. With this in mind, I settled in to watch the Grand Prix.
Uno de los comentarios que más gracia me dio durante todo el fin de semana fue el de Charles Leclerc comparando los autos con los de Mario Kart cuando uno toma un honguito más ir más rápido y si, es tal cual eso. La carrera para mi fue lamentable, super aburrida y hasta predecible diría yo. Digo predecible porque se sabía que Mercedes estaba "escondiendo" algo tanto para la pole position como para la carrera en si y es que ese motor de ellos es el más potente de los 11 equipos pero con una diferencia escandalosa y eso se notó durante todo el fin de semana. El gran premio comenzó súper entretenido y emocionante: esto es algo que va a decir cualquiera pero la verdad es que no fue así. Es cierto que esa lucha entre Russell y Leclerc por el liderato visiblemente fue cool pero eso esconde algo triste.
One of the funniest comments I heard all weekend was Charles Leclerc comparing the cars to those in Mario Kart when you grab a mushroom to go faster, and yes, that's exactly it. The race, for me, was lamentable, incredibly boring, and even predictable, I'd say. I say predictable because it was clear Mercedes was "hiding" something, both for pole position and for the race itself. Their engine is the most powerful of the 11 teams, by a huge margin, and that was evident throughout the weekend. The Grand Prix started out super entertaining and exciting: that's something everyone will say, but the truth is, it wasn't like that at all. It's true that the battle between Russell and Leclerc for the lead was undeniably cool, but it masks something sad.
Si, se requiere pericia y todo lo que sabemos pero esos adelantamientos se daban porque mientras a uno se le acababa la batería el otro recargaba y sobrepasaba; así sucesivamente. Estos motores tienen un serio de problema de fiabilidad que no permite que los pilotos conduzcan como ellos saben hacerlo, ahora tienen que estar pendientes de una serie cosas que hace que la carrera sea una experiencia tediosa para ellos. Esto duró poco, 11 vueltas, ya que tuvimos el primer VSC y a partir de allí la dinámica de la carrera cambió: volvió la monotonía. Hablemos por equipos. Mercedes es la escudería a vencer, su motor es sumamente potente y confiable, tanto Russell como Antonelli demostraron de que está hecho dejando una diferencia de más de 15 segundos con el tercero y más de 50 segundos con el quinto.
Yes, it requires skill and everything we know, but those overtakes happened because while one driver's battery ran out, the other would recharge and overtake; and so on. These engines have a serious reliability problem that prevents drivers from driving the way they know how. Now they have to be aware of a series of things that make the race a tedious experience for them. This didn't last long, just 11 laps, because we had the first VSC (Vehicle Safety Car) and from then on the race dynamics changed: the monotony returned. Let's talk about the teams. Mercedes is the team to beat; their engine is extremely powerful and reliable. Both Russell and Antonelli demonstrated what it's made of, leaving a gap of more than 15 seconds over third place and more than 50 seconds over fifth.
Les sigue Ferrari que otra vez fueron perjudicados por una mala estrategia. Creo que tienen motor y auto en general para darle un poco de pelea a Mercedes, lo demostraron en pista pero los errores del equipo mancharon la carrera. Los dos o por lo menos uno de ellos tenían que haber entrado a pits con el primer VSC, no lo hicieron; ahí se les fueron las oportunidades. Red Bull está lejos, Verstappen hizo una gran carrera subiendo posiciones para terminar de sexto, aunque habría que haber visto cómo hubiese sido la carrera con él en los puestos de arriba desde el comienzo. Hadjar tuvo abandono. McLaren también están lejos, Piastri no corrió y Norris fue intrascendente, el campeón mundial no se vio en la carrera ni se habló de él. Muy lejos están de aquel dominio que mostraron el año pasado.
Ferrari followed, once again hampered by a poor strategy. I believe they have the engine and overall car to give Mercedes a run for their money; they demonstrated this on track, but the team's mistakes marred the race. Both, or at least one, of them should have pitted during the first VSC, but they didn't; that's where their opportunities slipped away. Red Bull is far behind. Verstappen had a great race, climbing positions to finish sixth, although it would have been interesting to see how the race would have unfolded with him at the front from the start. Hadjar retired. McLaren is also far behind; Piastri didn't race, and Norris was ineffective. The world champion was nowhere to be seen in the race, and no one even mentioned him. They are a far cry from the dominance they displayed last year.
Cosas que me sorprendieron. Arvid Lindblad, de Racing Bull. El novato terminó P8 haciendo una gran carrera, se le vio carácter y personalidad. Bortoleto con Audi también fue una grata sorpresa, desde el año pasado se le ha visto bien al brasileño y no se esperaba el ritmo que tuvo con ese auto, P9 fue su posición final. Decepciones. Aston Martin es un desastre total, esa unidad de potencia de Honda les está haciendo una mala pasada. Creo que la temporada para ellos no pinta nada prometedora, tendría que haber un viraje extremo en su situación y no se yo si eso vaya a pasar. A Cadillac hay que tenerle paciencia, un equipo de la nada no es fácil gestionarlo. Por lo menos el Checo Pérez pudo terminar la carrera, a 3 vueltas pero la culminó,
Things that surprised me. Arvid Lindblad, from Racing Bull. The rookie finished P8, putting in a great race; he showed character and personality. Bortoleto with Audi was also a pleasant surprise. Since last year, the Brazilian has looked good, and we didn't expect the pace he had with that car; he finished P9. Disappointments. Aston Martin is a total disaster; that Honda power unit is really letting them down. I think the season doesn't look promising for them at all; there would have to be a complete turnaround, and I don't know if that's going to happen. We have to be patient with Cadillac; a team that came from nowhere isn't easy to manage. At least Checo Pérez was able to finish the race, three laps down, but he finished.
Primeros puntos para Mercedes, la verdad es que comenzaron muy sólidos, esto era un secreto a voces pero lo confirmaron de buena manera. P3 y P4 para Ferrari que como dije están cerca; RB y McLaren van a tener que trabajar extra para poder llegar a la senda de los dos de arriba. La próxima carrera es este fin de semana que viene en China por lo que habrá que madrugar bastante para poder ver la carrera. No me convence esta nueva Fórmula 1, capaz será una cosa de adaptación pero lo que vi en Australia no me gustó. Leí que la FIA está pensando en revertir algunas cosas a partir de Japon dada las quejas de los pilotos; veremos si es cierto.
First points for Mercedes, they really started very strongly, this was an open secret but they confirmed it in a good way. P3 and P4 for Ferrari who, as I said, are close; RB and McLaren are going to have to work extra hard to catch up with the top two. The next race is this coming weekend in China, so we'll have to get up quite early to watch it. I'm not convinced by this new Formula 1, maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it, but what I saw in Australia didn't appeal to me. I read that the FIA is considering reversing some things starting in Japan given the drivers' complaints; we'll see if it's true.
