Wanting to put the whole Vinotinto issue and its historic disgrace in the qualifiers behind us, I want to do so by talking a little about the major problem the national team has had with some of its players: a lack of self-criticism and humility. Mind you, this is nothing new; this pattern has been repeated cycle after cycle, where these players, who have never won anything in their lives and have no merit whatsoever with Venezuela, behave arrogantly at the slightest criticism. I'm referring to Yeferson Soteldo and "Brujo" Martínez, who in recent weeks have uncovered a cauldron of discontent among fans and sports journalists.
The first thing to say is that this whole situation wouldn't be happening if this country's journalists, if they can even be called that, hadn't been so complacent, blind, fawning, and uncritical of these players from the start of the qualifying rounds. This isn't to justify the actions or comments of these two players, but the reality is that all these "communicators" were responsible for praising a team that wasn't playing at all. One dribble from Soteldo and they'd elevate him to the Olympus of football. They compared him to Neymar in his prime, to Ronaldinho, and even called him the Messi of the Vinotinto team; a complete and senseless absurdity.
It all started because a journalist on a certain television program called Soteldo overrated, which isn't unreasonable to think and is quite debatable. Upon finding out, the "witch doctor" comments to the number 10 that "no one is a prophet in his own land," to which Yeferson replies, in a disdainful tone, "Who knows you?" I know this sounds like a poorly told and tasteless soap opera, but it's the context of the situation. Martínez is right; they aren't prophets here; his comment came off very poorly. To be one, you have to have won, you have to have made a name for yourself, you have to be someone, and they, unfortunately, aren't. I find it hard to understand how there are players who find it very difficult to accept criticism. Do they really believe themselves to be gods? Do they perceive themselves as untouchables and stars? You can't be so disconnected from everything.
Cape Verde, a tiny, remote island of just over 500,000 inhabitants, qualified for its first World Cup faster than Venezuela. And yes, we understand the difficulty of qualifying in Africa and here in CONMEBOL, but that just goes to show that we're completely nothing. Then these guys come along to get offended because people are telling them the truth, truths with a lot of justification. There's no moral authority to have the attitude these two players are having. But then I ask a question here: Is Soteldo really overrated?
He's a good player when his mind is in the right place, a classic problem for many footballers. He's always left every club he's played for, for some reason or other, struggling or failing to perform as expected. He has quality, but if he doesn't focus on it, or direct it correctly, he'll never transcend. So yes, a player who fails in his mind and doesn't perform up to expectations is an overrated player. It's worth remembering that Soteldo disappeared in more than half of the qualifying rounds; that match against Chile in Maturin is the only one I remember him appearing in. A lack of humility can bury a player; Yeferson Soteldo is going through that process.
It was a pitiful spectacle, because that wave is already declining, but it will undoubtedly leave its mark on the future. Will they be called up to the national team again? It will depend on the manager in charge, but if it's someone other than Vizcarrondo, I think so. People sometimes have short memories, and when they see a goal from Soteldo or a great game from Martínez, they'll forget everything. It's always the same, and it's one of the reasons for our misfortunes; we don't learn from the past. When we play in the World Cup of ego, we'll see Soteldo as the standard-bearer, no doubt about it.

Y esos que ves diciendo cualquier despropósito, son los mismos que luego de cualquier derrota, se van a beber a un bar sin el más mínimo dolor o vergüenza por la camiseta.
El salto de mentalidad tiene que ser enorme, para poder ir a un mundial.

Así es, se creen intocables. Ese mal siempre ha existido, con unos pocos afortunadamente. La evolución además del juego tiene que ser en mayor medida mental, no podemos ser tan pobres cuando no hemos hecho absolutamente nada para merecer tales comportamientos. Espero que eso llegue en el nuevo ciclo.

Recuerdo muchos años atrás cuando destacaba en Vélez Sarsfield el arquero paraguayo José Luis Chilavert, le dijo a Navarro Montoya, por aquel tiempo arquero de Boca: "Tú no has ganado nada". Más allá de que la frase se hizo famosa, el muy buen arquero recibió una catarata de críticas y no era para menos. La soberbia es un mal que asola a los deportistas que han tenido algún tipo de éxito; conozco varios compatriotas a quienes se les ha contagiado.
El ex arquero tuvo su merecido años después, cuando en un debate televisivo con el también ex defensor y campeón mundial en 1986 con el seleccionado argentino, Oscar Ruggeri, sobre las selecciones nacionales de ambos países, este le contestó justamente con esa frase, Chilavert se tuvo que callar.
Coincido con las palabras de mi amigo @fermionico. Hay que hacer el salto de mentalidad hacia la humildad, de lo contrario nunca ganarán nada.

Chilavert siempre tuvo problemas porque su boca era más grande que sus acciones. Un gran arquero pero provocador y bocón como pocos. Pareciera que eso es lo común, el ser agrandado sin merecerlo.
Y si, yo también coincido. Hasta que no ganemos terreno en el desarrollo de una mente ganadora y centrada, seguiremos hundidos en la miseria del fútbol.

En la semana en que se disputó el amistoso contra Argentina, tenía pensado el escribir un post al que iba a titular como "Profetas", algo enfocado en todo la polémica desatada por el comportamiento de Soteldo y el Bruno, pero la realidad es que decidí mejor ver el juego de la vinotinto y pensé que sería mejor hablar sobre la participación de los nuevos convocados y nada más, esto lo digo porque al leer su publicación, posiblemente hubiera Sido muy parecida porque no hay duda de que la decepción causada por ese grupo de individuos es impresionante, tanto que le abrió los ojos a los aficionados que creían y apoyaron a personas que nunca han valorado absolutamente nada, ya que se creen algo más cuando no son absolutamente nada.
La ideología del deportista venezolano, en este caso el futbolista es de estudio y no solo ellos (jugadores), sino todo lo que rodea a ese deporte en Venezuela, ya que entrenadores y periodistas, creen que tienen todas las respuestas, las cuales no tienen ningún valor porque al final, Venezuela nuevamente se queda fuera del Mundial teniendo una actuación lamentable.
Personalmente yo espero que esa gente más nunca sea parte de la selección, creo que el humo que se vende con jugadores y demás personalidades, es problemático, no aporta nada positivo y solo espero que quien llegue a liderar al equipo, no sea cómplice de nada lo que rodea al FutVE, algo muy difícil, pero con la esperanza de que no sea imposible lograr algo bueno.
Yo esperaría que tampoco se vuelvan a vestir con la camiseta Vinotinto pero lamentablemente creo que no será así. Pero lo más triste no será eso, será que a las personas que hoy critican muy probablemente se les va a olvidar todo esto y apoyarán de nuevo a este para como si nada hubiese pasado.
Mientras los técnicos estén al servicio de la federación y no del país y sus fanáticos, seguiremos en las mismas. Esa independencia es muy complicada por todo el sistema país que tenemos pero no imposible. Ojalá, como dices, eso se consiga porque si no, no habrá buena generación de jugadores que valga.
