Los playoff terminaron el día de ayer definiendo quiénes serán los últimos 16 equipos de los octavos de final. Si bien es verdad que el sorteo será mañana de lo que podemos hablar es de algunas cosas que vimos en estos partidos que nos pueden ayudar a visualizar un poco el panorama en torno a la Champions. Lo primero sería la grata sorpresa que ha sido el equipo noruego del Bodø/Glimt, una plantilla que juega un fútbol espectacular y que ha dado mucho de que hablar en esta primera fase de la Champions. ¿Por qué lo digo? - pues porque en su transitar ha dado grandes resultados contra clubes que uno esperaría hubiesen podido solventar de una manera más fácil.

Why do I say this? Because they have achieved impressive results against clubs that one might expect to have dispatched more easily.
Estamos hablando de que lograron sacar empates contra el Tottenham y el Borussia Dortmund y ganarles a nada más y nada menos que al Manchester City, Atlético de Madrid y al Inter por partida doble. Esto se consigue jugando un verdadero futbol, ordenado, con bloques sólidos de defensa pero sobretodo con una visión de juego ofensivo muy práctica y eficaz. El partido contra el City fue impresionante porque lograron anular a los de Guardiola al mismo tiempo que ellos fueron súper efectivos, 5 remates al arco, 3 goles. Contra el Inter esta semana fue la misma historia, este Bodo-Glimt sin un juego vistoso ni llamativo se llevaron el partido.

Pero cuando hablamos de decepciones no solo es la del Inter, es la del fútbol italiano en pleno. Que los finalistas del año pasado y los actuales líderes de la Serie A hayan caído contra el modesto Bodo/Glimt es para preguntarse muchas cosas. Porque no es tanto perder sino la forma en como hicieron, fue como ver a dos equipos diferentes, el de Champions y el de liga. La Juventus también fue despachada ayer por el Galatasaray en un partido en donde con 10 jugadores parecía que podía llevarse la eliminatoria pero con dos goles de los turcos en la prórroga la Vecchia Signora se quedó en el camino. Es cierto que la Juve, quinta en la Serie A, no es la ni la sombra de lo que fue en años anteriores pero esa ventaja de 3-0 que tenían ayer daba para soñar; lamentablemente no se pudo y así se consuma otro fracaso para los italianos.
But when we talk about disappointments, it's not just Inter's; it's the entire Italian football scene. The fact that last year's finalists and current Serie A leaders fell to the modest Bodø/Glimt raises many questions. Because it's not so much the loss itself, but the manner of it; it was like watching two different teams, the Champions League side and the league team. Juventus was also dispatched yesterday by Galatasaray in a match where, with 10 men, it seemed they could win the tie, but two goals from the Turkish side in extra time saw the Old Lady eliminated. It's true that Juve, fifth in Serie A, is a shadow of its former self, but that 3-0 advantage they held yesterday gave them reason to dream; unfortunately, it wasn't to be, and thus another failure is added to the list of disappointments for the Italians.
Pero el Napoli también quedó fuera en la primera fase con apenas 8 puntos sumados. El unico que logró dar un par hacia adelante fue el Atalanta quien le ganó con autoridad al Dortmund por 4-1 para así darle vuelta al marcador global y poner su nombre en los octavos de final como el unico club italiano. Pero esto es un tema estructural, el Milan no está jugando nada en Europa, la Roma tampoco, la selección mayor está buscando su pase al mundial en unos repechajes a jugarse en el próximo mes de marzo, es decir, el "fracaso" es generalizado. Más allá de lo hecho por los noruegos y por los italianos, para mal, el resto de los clubes presentes para el sorteo de mañana no son tan inesperados.
But Napoli also failed to advance in the first round with just 8 points. Pueden darle grandes partidos en los octavos pero eso lo sabremos mañana. Lo que si es real es que en esta Champions nada está escrito, un Sporting de Lisboa metido en octavos y haciendo una gran temporada; un Tottenham que están de 16 en la Premier, a dos puestos del descenso, el mismo Bodo y un Leverkusen que está un tanto irregular nos habla de una dinámica de Champions que es totalmente diferente a lo que se vive en las ligas domésticas.
They might face some tough matches in the round of 16, but we'll know that tomorrow. What is certain is that in this Champions League, nothing is certain. Sporting Lisbon, already in the round of 16 and having a great season; Tottenham, currently 16th in the Premier League, just two places above the relegation zone; Bodø; and a somewhat inconsistent Bayer Leverkusen all point to a Champions League dynamic that is completely different from what we see in domestic leagues.
