Sublime and Beautiful Sunday - Actifit: March 28 2021

My Sunday was beautiful, sublime and busy. And I had an unintended adventure!

I had to get my son to his job first thing in the day. Five minutes from where he works at the Mall of America there is a large wildlife refuge that I have been meaning to explore. So I had my walking boots and a warm jacket. Although the snow and ice have melted, we still have chilly weather. When I set out it was only a few degrees above freezing.

There were high, puffy clouds speckled across a brilliant blue sky.

I set out on the trails. There were other people around. I wasn’t sure which way to go, however, because the trail signs were confusing and some said they were closed. But no one seemed to be paying heed!

I found myself on a very rough service road. Where was the trail? I did hear a bit of eerie music in the background that seemed to be warning me, but I decided to ignore it. (Kidding, of course.)

The road was definitely under construction. They’ve installed heavy duty platforms across the road in places so trucks can get through without sinking into the mud.

But this is clearly a work in progress. The road was under water in several places from snow melt and recent rains.

It was very rough going, and in addition to skirting around the lakes in the road, I had to walk over deep ruts from the heavy vehicles.

To my left was the Minnesota River, and to my right was a lake.

But the concerning thing was that I thought I was on a 3 mile hike and that would mean I should be looping back. The road was continuing on straight and/or curving in the wrong direction. Where was I?? I hadn’t seen anyone else for a long time.

Finally I checked my location on GPS. I was not on a 3 mile loop at all. I had to retrace my steps!

On the way back I discovered a little hut decorated by a pair of jeans. Super creepy. Could someone be living there?

Needless to say, I was very glad to get back to the main wildlife refuge area and people!

It was a great hike, all in all. It was a very good workout due to the highly rough road and walking through muck and ridges from truck wheels.
