Ice castles and playgrounds in the snow - Sublime and Beautiful Sunday - Actifit: January 2 2022

(Edited)

Tonight I went walking just before dusk. I feared I had missed the opportunity to take any really good pictures because during the beautifully sunny earlier part of the day I was busy with a project and couldn’t get outside for a walk. Wow, it it was a bright day, with sunshine glinting off snow. But since the sun sets a little after 4:30 pm, if I don’t get out the door by 3:00 or so, I’ve missed my chance!

Anyway, I was taking pictures of this and that hoping at least a few pictures would be fun for my blog post as I walked around my neighborhood and all of a sudden I saw this!

The thing was massive — about 30 feet high. I assume it was created with a garden hose and probably too several days to build. It is so cold in Minnesota right now that you can toss a pan of hot water into the air and the droplets will freeze by the time they clatter to the ground!

Also on my expedition I walked through a children’s playground, which was lying in wait for the spring thaw and for the squeals of delighted children to return once again to play.

I also took pictures of the park benches where the parents sit to watch their children play, as well as the tennis court and drinking fountain. There is something so poignant about these things that are so full of life in the warm months just lying idle.

And finally, I took a selfie just because it is kind of hilarious how much stuff I have to wear during the extreme cold periods. Today it “warmed up” to 7 degrees Fahrenheit, which is better than yesterday when it was below zero. (You can see the difference if you look at my picture in yesterday’s post.

I thought that thing might have been a frozen water fountain.

I don't actually know for sure, but it would be quite unusual for a suburban Minnesota family to have a large fountain in their front yard. I am pretty certain they built it with a water hose. I have been to an ice castle that was formed that way. Someday I should find my pictures and do a post about it. Thanks for visiting, @ace108!

You're welcome. It's interesting if someone really build it with a hose although technically you probably don't have to watch it but just run a lot of water.

Beautiful photography and excellent post.

We just got done dealing with some snow here in Portland and it really wasn't that bad with the exception of everybody playing bumper cars.

Yep every time winner hits everybody freaks out and it's like snow apocalypse.

People really don't know how to drive in the snow so that makes it even worse and then a lot of people just are clueless anyway out here. However the towing industry as well as automotive repair have an absolute windfall every time the snow comes.

And the worst part is it's a really wet very close to 32°. The humidity is super high so the cold cuts right to the bone.

I hope you keep warm during all this I would really like that fur lining on the coat!

Ah, Portland, my home town. When I was growing up there we had several "ice storms." I don't think there has been one in quite some time. The freeways would become like giant skating rinks, and the trees and shrubs would become so heavy with ice that they would snap. One winter when I was in college, I remember walking across my campus on the hill (Lewis & Clark College), and about every ten minutes I would hear a tree fall.

Last year we had a horrific ice storm that really shut the entire city down. Like actually shut it all down and froze everything solid.

This time around we got a little snow and some cold temperatures. The snow turned into slush everything was fine.

However last year snow apocalypse had everybody scared that the world was going to end and mad Max was going to be running around.

Yep I'm just dying of laughter actually!

Wow.... Snow everywhere. I really love the looks. Over here is winter season. Harmattan is blowing leaves down from trees.....

I'm glad you had a nice day friend.

The first image is just like fountain, nature is all time best, nature creates its own designs. Quite amazing

Yes, it does look like a fountain, doesn't it? But I believe it is a giant sculpture formed by spraying water with a hose. I would have loved to see it being made!
