Hey everyone, I hope all you fellow Otakus are doing great. This time, I want to share a new review with all of you, about an awesome anime I saw a while back. When you mention its name, people either give you a 'what the hell?' look or just straight up dodge the subject. I get it, I really do, but give me a chance, hear me out, because if you like underdog stories, characters that stick with you, and non-stop excitement, you HAVE to give Eyeshield 21 a shot. Look, let's be honest: they tell you "it's an American football anime" and the first reaction—myself included—is like... what a drag, right? It's a sport that almost nobody in Latin America pays attention to and it sounds super complicated. But I swear, this series is proof that the sport is the least important part; what matters is the damn story they're telling. Eyeshield 21 doesn't just get you hooked on American football, it does it so well that you end up screaming at the TV with every play, understanding the strategies, and feeling every single brutal hit.

They explain everything, from the most basic stuff to the most complex, but not like a boring class. They weave it right into the tension of the game, and suddenly, without even realizing it, you know what the hell a touchdown is, an onside kick, or what the offensive line is for. It's insane how it inspires you and makes you end up loving a sport you've never cared about in your life. The story starts with our protagonist, Sena Kobayakawa... and this is where many might drop it. Sena is the classic high school weakling who's been the "errand boy" his whole life. He's super shy, a crybaby, and has zero self-confidence. His only "talent" is that from running away from bullies and doing favors all the time, he developed a speed that seems otherworldly. Honestly, the dude is frustrating at first. I'm telling you, I'm the first one who can't stand protagonists who spend all their time whining and doubting themselves, and Sena, uff, he checks all those boxes. BUT, and it's a HUGE but, it makes perfect sense here. His growth is the heart of the series, and watching this guy go from being a total nobody to becoming "Eyeshield 21," the legendary and mysterious running back whose identity is a secret… phew, it's one of the most brutal and satisfying character arcs I've ever witnessed.

Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien amigos Otakus, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir a todos ustedes una nueva reseña, de un anime genial que ví hace un tiempo y cuando lo nombras, la gente o pone cara de ‘¿what?’ o de plano le saca la vuelta al tema.. los entiendo, de verdad, pero denme chance, escúchenme, porque si a ustedes les gustan las historias de superación, los personajes que se te quedan grabados y la emoción a tope, TIENEN que darle una oportunidad a Eyeshield 21.. a ver, seamos honestos: te dicen "un anime de fútbol americano" y la primera reacción, y me incluyo, es como… qué flojera, ¿no? Es un deporte que acá en Latinoamérica casi nadie le pone cuidado y suena complicadísimo, pero les juro que esta serie es la prueba de que el deporte es lo de menos, lo que importa es la pinche historia que te están contando, Eyeshield 21 no solo hace que te claves con el fútbol americano, sino que lo hace tan bien que terminas gritándole a la tele en cada jugada, entendiendo las estrategias y sintiendo cada madrazo.

Te explican todo, desde lo más básico hasta lo más complejo, pero no en plan clase aburrida, sino que te lo meten ahí, en medio de la tensión del partido.. y de repente, sin que te des cuenta, ya sabes qué carajos es un touchdown, un onside kick o para qué sirve la línea ofensiva. Es una locura cómo te inspira y te termina gustando un deporte que en tu vida te había interesado, la cosa empieza con nuestro prota, Sena Kobayakawa.. y aquí es donde muchos, chance, lo botan. Sena es el clásico debilucho de prepa que ha sido el "chico de los mandados" toda su vida, es súper tímido, llorón, cero confianza en sí mismo. Su única "gracia" es que, de tanto escaparse de los bullies y correr para hacer favores, desarrolló una velocidad que parece de otro planeta, honestamente, el vato al principio desespera.. se los digo yo, que soy el primero que no aguanta a los protas que se la pasan lloriqueando y dudando de todo, y Sena, uff, cumple con todos los requisitos. PERO, y es un pero GIGANTE, aquí tiene todo el sentido del mundo.. su crecimiento es el corazón de la serie, y ver cómo este wey pasa de ser un cero a la izquierda a convertirse en "Eyeshield 21", el corredor legendario y misterioso que nadie sabe quién es… pfff, es de las evoluciones más brutales y satisfactorias que he visto en mi vida.

But if Sena is the body of the team, the one who is the heart, the brain, and the fucking demon in charge is undoubtedly the captain, Hiruma Yoichi. And look, let me tell you something: Hiruma is, no bullshit, one of the best characters I've ever seen in a sports anime. The guy isn't the strongest, nor the fastest, he doesn't have one of those natural-born talents. What Hiruma has is a brain that works a mile a minute, a strategic ability that's on another fucking level, and the personality of a blackmailing demon that, ugh, is pure genius. He's that bastard who always has a Plan B, C, and even Z; who knows everyone's weaknesses (and has them noted down in his 'threat notebook') and who is capable of turning a game around with tactics so crazy and risky that they blow your mind. Thanks to him, the Deimon Devil Bats' victories never feel like plot armor. Every victory is calculated, the result of a strategy by this bastard, even if it seems like absolute madness at first. Hiruma only enters a game if he knows he has at least a 0.1% chance of winning, and he will fight with everything he has for that fucking 0.1%.

He is the reason why every game is a masterclass in tension and how to screw over the opponent. And this leads me to the most badass thing about the series: the eternal battle between natural-born talent and working your ass off. Hiruma is effort personified. He wasn't born a genius; he became one through sheer study and having balls of steel. He trains like an animal and thinks twice as much as anyone else. On the other side of the coin, you have people like Agon Kongo, a damn prodigy, a genius who was just born with the gift. He's the typical guy who doesn't need to try to be the best, and he knows it. The series doesn't give you the easy answer. Sometimes, talent seems impossible to overcome, but what Eyeshield 21 shows you in a brutal way is that effort and, above all, that hunger to win, that will to survive that comes from starting at the bottom, can take you to places that pure talent can't even imagine. Hiruma and his team have that hunger; Agon, for all his perfection, often doesn't.

Pero si Sena es el cuerpo del equipo, el que es el corazón, el cerebro y el puto demonio al mando, es sin duda el capitán, Hiruma Yoichi.. y a ver, déjenme decirles algo: Hiruma es, sin mamadas, uno de los mejores personajes que he visto en un anime de deportes, el tipo no es el más fuerte, ni el más rápido, no tiene un talento de esos de nacimiento.. lo que Hiruma tiene es un cerebro que va a mil por hora, una capacidad para la estrategia que es de otro pinche nivel y una personalidad de demonio chantajista que, uff, es una genialidad. Es este cabrón que siempre tiene un plan B, C y hasta Z; que se sabe las debilidades de todo el mundo (y las tiene anotaditas en su ‘libreta de amenazas’) y que es capaz de darle la vuelta al partido con unas tácticas tan locas y arriesgadas que te quedas pendejo.. gracias a él, las victorias de los Deimon Devil Bats nunca se sienten como un guionazo. Cada victoria está pensada, es el resultado de una estrategia de este cabrón, aunque al principio parezca una puta locura, Hiruma solo se mete a un partido si sabe que tiene, aunque sea, un 0.1% de chance de ganar, y va a pelear con todo por ese puto 0.1%.

Él es la razón por la que cada partido es una clase de tensión y de cómo joder al rival, y esto me lleva a lo más cabrón de la serie: la eterna pelea entre el talento de nacimiento y el partirse la madre trabajando,Hiruma es el esfuerzo hecho persona.. no nació siendo un genio, se convirtió en uno a punta de estudiar y de tener unos huevos de acero. Entrena como animal y piensa el doble que los demás, del otro lado de la moneda tienes a gente como Agon Kongo, un pinche prodigio, un genio que nació con el don y ya está.. es el típico que no necesita esforzarse para ser el mejor, y lo sabe, la serie no te da la respuesta fácil.. a veces el talento parece imposible de vencer, pero lo que Eyeshield 21 te demuestra de una forma brutal es que el esfuerzo y, sobre todo, esa hambre de ganar, esas ganas de sobrevivir que te da el venir desde abajo, te pueden llevar a lugares que el puro talento ni se imagina. Hiruma y su equipo tienen esa hambre; Agon, con todo y su perfección, muchas veces no la tiene.

And speaking of the team... uff, that's another one of this show's gems. The Deimon Devil Bats start out as three strangers: Hiruma, the gentle giant Kurita, and Sena, who is forced to join. They are the nobodies of the school. Everyone makes fun of them, looks down on them, and at first, they can't even gather enough players for a game. They have to go around borrowing members from other clubs. The way the team comes together, little by little, with each new member, is fantastic. Every character has their own story, their own issues, and their moment to shine. From Monta, a kid who looks like a little monkey and dreamed of being a baseball star, to the "Ha-Ha Brothers," who were delinquents and end up finding their place on the offensive line. The series takes its time to get you invested in each one of them, and their dream of reaching the Christmas Bowl becomes YOUR dream.

But look, if there's one moment that defines the spirit of the entire series, it's the story of a character named Yukimitsu. This guy is the definition of a "loser" in sports. He's not athletic, not strong, wears glasses, is balding, and his mom just wants him to focus on his studies. He's the one who always warms the bench, the one who never plays. You can relate to him if you were ever the kid who wasn't good at sports. But in a key game, where they are getting their asses kicked, Hiruma puts him on the field. You're left thinking: "What the hell is this guy gonna do?" He can't run, he can't block... and you're absolutely right.

But Yukimitsu did the only thing he knew how to do: study. The guy uses his intelligence to find a perfect route that no one else sees, a play they call the "Option Route." Seeing this kid, with zero physical talent, use his brain and his guts to score an impossible touchdown is... phew, it's one of the most badass and emotional moments I've ever seen in an anime. It's the victory of effort, intelligence, and heart over brute force. I get goosebumps just remembering it.

Y hablando del equipo… uff, esa es otra de las joyas de esta madre,Los Deimon Devil Bats empiezan siendo, tres desconocidos: Hiruma, el gigante buena onda de Kurita, y Sena, al que meten a la fuerza, son los don nadie del instituto.. todo el mundo se burla de ellos, los ven para abajo, y al principio ni siquiera juntan los jugadores para un partido, tienen que andar pidiendo prestados de otros clubes.. la forma en que el equipo se va armando, poco a poquito, con cada nuevo integrante, es brutal. Cada personaje tiene su rollo, su propia historia, y su momento para rifársela, desde Monta, un chico que parece un changuito y que soñaba con ser una estrella del béisbol, hasta los "Hermanos Ja-Ja", que eran unos malandros y terminan encontrando su lugar en la línea ofensiva.. la serie se toma el tiempo para que te claves con cada uno, y su sueño de llegar al Christmas Bowl se termina convirtiendo en TU sueño.

Pero miren, si hay un momento que define el espíritu de toda la serie, es la historia de un personaje llamado Yukimitsu, este tipo es la definición del "perdedor" en los deportes.. no es atlético, no es fuerte, usa lentes, tiene más entradas que un cine y su mamá nomás quiere que se ponga a estudiar, es el que siempre come banca, el que nunca juega.. te identificas con él si alguna vez fuiste al que no se le daban los deportes. Pero en un partido clave, donde les están poniendo una madriza, Hiruma lo mete a la cancha.. tú te quedas pensando: ¿y este qué chingados va a hacer? No puede correr, no puede bloquear.. tienes toda la razón.

Pero Yukimitsu hizo lo único que sabía hacer: estudiar.. el cabrón usa su inteligencia para encontrar una ruta perfecta que nadie más ve, una jugada que le llaman la "Ruta Opcional". Ver a este chico, sin nada de talento físico, usar su cerebro y sus huevos para anotar un touchdown imposible es... pfff, es de los momentos más cabrones y emocionantes que he visto en un anime.. es la victoria del esfuerzo, de la inteligencia y del corazón por encima de la fuerza bruta..se me pone la piel chinita nomás de acordarme.

Okay, visually, we need to separate things here. The manga, drawn by the god Yusuke Murata, the same guy from One-Punch Man, is a fucking work of art. The way he draws movement, the dynamism, the impact of the hits... holy shit, it's spectacular. There are double-page spreads that you could frame and hang on a wall. The anime, on the other hand, is fine, but it doesn't reach that level. Let's be honest, the animation looks a bit dated at times and they recycle scenes, which was typical for long-running series of that era. But the story is so good that you forgive it all. A piece of advice: if you can, look for the DVD version, because the quality is much, much better than what was broadcast on TV. Also, the series has a perfect balance of drama, game tension, and comedy. There are moments to laugh your ass off, especially because of Hiruma and the team's antics, which lighten the mood and make it super entertaining to watch. BUT, and here comes the most important warning I can give you, pay attention: the anime, which is 145 episodes long, has no ending.

It just cuts off, right at a super exciting part, and leaves a ton of things up in the air. It's bullshit, it's infuriating, and you feel ripped off. The manga, however, does have a complete, well-wrapped-up ending. So my recommendation is this: watch the anime. Fall in love with the characters, scream during the games, enjoy the music and the voices. And when it's over, run and read the manga to get the ending this incredible story deserves. Eyeshield 21 is much more than just a damn sports anime. It's a story of friendship, of working your ass off, and of finding your own worth. It has unforgettable characters, moments that will make you scream with excitement, and a powerful message. Despite the anime's shitty ending and the fact that the protagonist is a bit frustrating at first, the complete experience is so good that I have no choice but to recommend it to everyone. My rating for the complete package, anime plus manga, is a solid 9/10. It's a fucking masterpiece that almost no one watches and that deserves more recognition. A ver, en lo visual, aquí hay que separar las cosas.. el manga, que lo dibuja el dios Yusuke Murata, el mismo de One-Punch Man, es una puta obra de arte, la manera en que dibuja el movimiento, el dinamismo, el impacto de los madrazos... no mames, es espectacular. Hay páginas dobles que son para ponerlas en un cuadro.. el anime, por otro lado, está bien, pero no le llega a ese nivel, seamos honestos, la animación a ratos se ve medio viejita y reciclan escenas, lo típico de las series largas de esa época, pero la historia es tan buena que se lo perdonas todo.. un consejo: si pueden, búsquense la versión en DVD, porque la calidad se ve mucho, mucho mejor que la que pasaban en la tele. Además, la serie tiene un balance perfecto entre el drama, la tensión de los partidos y la comedia.. hay momentos para cagarse de la risa, sobre todo por Hiruma y las mamadas del equipo, que le quitan lo pesado y hacen que sea súper entretenida de ver, PERO, y aquí viene la advertencia más importante que les puedo dar, pongan atención: el anime, que son 145 capítulos, no tiene final.

Se corta así nomás, en una parte súper emocionante y te deja con un chingo de cosas en el aire.. es una mamada, te da un coraje que te cagas y te sientes estafado, el manga, en cambio, sí tiene un final completo, bien cerradito.. así que mi recomendación es esta: vean el anime.. enamórense de los personajes, griten con los partidos, gocen la música, las voces. Y cuando se acabe, corran a leerse el manga para tener el final que esta increíble historia se merece, Eyeshield 21 es mucho más que un pinche anime de deportes. Es una historia de amistad, de partirse la madre y de encontrar lo que vales.. tiene personajes inolvidables, momentos que te van a hacer gritar de la emoción y un mensaje bien cabrón.. a pesar del final culero del anime y de que el prota al principio es medio desesperante, la experiencia completa es tan buena que no me queda de otra más que recomendársela a todo el mundo. Mi calificación para el paquete completo, anime más manga, es un sólido 9/10.
