Hey everyone, fellow book fans, I hope you're all doing great today. This time, I want to tell you about a curious book... so today, I'll be talking about Mile High by Liz Tomforde. This book was absolutely everywhere, and since I have a HUGE weakness for hockey romances, it was obvious I was going to cave. The hype was massive, and the plot is exactly what you'd imagine from that title and the tropes it promises. It's about Stevie, a flight attendant who lands a new job on a private jet. And what's the catch? The jet belongs to a professional hockey team, which means she's going to spend her life cooped up in the air with a bunch of athletes—imagine the disaster! And that's where she meets Evan Zanders, the team's bad boy, the typical player everyone loves to hate... you know the type: super arrogant, with a different girl every night.

Sparks fly the moment they meet, but not the good kind; it's not a sweet encounter at all—they clash over everything! Stevie swore she'd never date an athlete again and isn't here for his games, and of course, that just makes him more curious. It's the classic enemies-to-lovers trope, and since they're forced to be together on a plane, the tension goes... sky-high! Now, I have to be super honest with you... for the first 25% of the book, I was SO close to DNF-ing it because I just couldn't connect with the main characters. Zanders took his cocky player persona way too seriously; he was unbearable. And Stevie was so... closed off that I found it hard to root for her. I remember thinking, "Okay, if I don't like either of them, how the hell am I supposed to care about their romance?" But everyone loved this book, so I told myself, "Alright, fine, I'll stick with it a little longer" and kept reading... and guys, I'm so glad I did.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, espero que hoy se encuentren súper bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero comentar un poco de un libro curioso.. así que hoy les hablaré de Mile High de Liz Tomforde.. este libro estaba hasta en la sopa y, como yo tengo una debilidad GIGANTE por los romances de hockey, pues era obvio que iba a caer.. el hype era masivo, la trama es justo lo que te imaginas con ese título y los tropos que te promete, la cosa va de Stevie, una azafata que consigue un nuevo trabajo en un jet privado. ¿Y cuál es el chiste? Que el jet es de un equipo de hockey profesional, o sea que se va a pasar la vida encerrada en el aire con un montón de atletas, ¡imagínense el desastre! Y ahí es donde conoce a Evan Zanders, el bad boy del equipo, el típico jugador que todo el mundo ama odiar.. ya saben: súper arrogante, con una chica distinta cada noche...

Desde que se conocen, saltan chispas, pero no de las buenas, para nada es un encuentro tierno, ¡chocan con todo! Stevie se juró nunca más salir con atletas y no está para sus jueguitos, y claro, eso a él solo le da más curiosidad.. es el clásico enemies to lovers, y con eso de que están obligados a estar juntos en un avión, la tensión se va… ¡hasta el cielo! Ahora, les tengo que ser súper honesto.. durante el primer 25% del libro, estuve a NADA de abandonarlo, es que de verdad no lograba conectar con los protas. Zanders se tomaba demasiado en serio su papel de jugador creído, era insoportable, y Stevie era tan… cerrada, que me costaba ponerme de su lado.. yo me acuerdo que pensaba: "Ok, si no me cae bien ninguno de los dos, ¿cómo carajos se supone que me importe su romance?". Pero es que todo el mundo amaba este libro, así que dije "bueno, va, voy a aguantar un poco más" y seguí leyendo.. gente, qué bueno que lo hice.

Okay, so the deal here is that the romance IS the plot. This isn't a book with a villain or a mystery to solve, no, no, no... the whole point is to dive deep into the daily lives of these two people, to see how they deal with their jobs, their pasts, and that chemistry that, my God, they just can't deny. It's a slow burn, a legitimate one in every sense of the word, and that's precisely why the characters feel so, so well-developed. Little by little, as you read, you start to see that their whole act is just a facade. You realize that Zanders' party-boy, womanizer persona is just a shell he built to protect himself, and that he's super sweet on the inside. There are scenes that will just melt your heart, like when he's with his nieces on Halloween. Something similar happens with Stevie; her walls start to come down, and you understand why she's so guarded: because of all the pressure from her family and a ton of insecurities she carries.

The author does a really good job of peeling back their layers, one by one, and that's why when they finally get together, it feels so earned, so real. Their arguments are super witty and sharp; they'll make you laugh out loud... it's like watching the best rom-com on Netflix. Honestly, their verbal sparring is one of a kind. But, buuuut... my only big "but" is the pacing. Since the book focuses so much on what the characters are feeling and thinking, some parts feel a bit repetitive, to be honest. There were moments when I was thinking, "Okay, let something happen already! Let's move a little faster!" I think with some good editing, trimming a little here and there, the story would have maintained its momentum better. It's a long book, you know, and at times, you can really feel its length.

Okay, aquí la onda es que el romance ES la trama, este no es un libro con un villano o un misterio que resolver, no, no, no.. aquí el chiste es meterse de lleno en el día a día de estas dos personas, ver cómo lidian con sus trabajos, su pasado y esa química que, ¡Dios mío!, no pueden negar.. la cosa va a fuego lento, un slow burn con todas las de la ley, y justo por eso los personajes se sienten tan, pero tan bien desarrollados, poco a poco, mientras vas leyendo, empiezas a ver que toda esa pose que tienen es pura fachada. Te das cuenta de que lo de Zanders, el fiestero, el mujeriego, es solo un caparazón que se armó para protegerse y que por dentro es súper tierno.. hay unas escenas que te derriten, como cuando está con sus sobrinas en Halloween, que de verdad, con Stevie pasa algo parecido, sus murallas se empiezan a caer y entiendes por qué es tan cerrada: por toda la presión de su familia y un montón de inseguridades que carga.

La autora, de verdad, lo hace bien quitándoles capa por capa, y por eso, cuando por fin están juntos, se siente súper ganado, súper real.. Esas discusiones entre ellos son súper ingeniosas, filosas, te sacan unas carcajadas… es como estar viendo la mejor comedia romántica de Netflix.. de verdad, sus peleítas verbales son de lo mejor del libro. Pero, peeeero... mi único "pero" grande es el ritmo, como el libro se clava tanto en lo que sienten y piensan los personajes, hay partes que se sienten medio repetitivas, la verdad. Había momentos en que yo decía "¡ya, que pase algo!, ¡avancemos un poquito más rápido!" y creo que con una buena edición, cortando un poquito aquí y allá, la historia hubiera mantenido mejor el impulso.. es que es un libro largo, eh, y por momentos sí que se le sienten las páginas.

Despite all that, the book delivers on its promises. The spice level is high—I'd give it a 4/5 on my personal scale, easily! They take their sweet time to stop being "enemies," but once that barrier falls, oof, the scenes are frequent, super hot, and very well-written. Plus, it checks off all the tropes we love: enemies to lovers, forbidden workplace romance, forced proximity, and a curvy girl representation that I absolutely loved. Beyond the romance, the author does an incredible job of making Chicago feel like another character in the story. It's not just a backdrop; the city's locations are truly woven into the plot and give it a super rich atmosphere. There's also a very important subplot about dog rescue, which is beautifully integrated into how the characters interact; it's a beautiful and very emotional part. But I'll give you a little warning: if the topic of shelters or senior dogs is a sensitive one for you, be aware that it comes up quite a bit. So, who is this book for? If you're a die-hard fan of sports romance, especially hockey, this is a must-read.

If you live for the enemies-to-lovers trope and enjoy a good slow burn where the payoff feels incredibly earned, you will devour this. It's for readers who prefer character-driven stories over highly complex plots, and who like a good dose of humor and passion. Going from not liking the characters to being completely invested in their story and rooting for their happiness was an incredible reading experience. Con todo y eso, el libro cumple lo que promete, el nivel de spice es alto, yo le doy un 4/5 en mi escala personal, ¡fácil! Se tardan lo suyo en dejar de ser "enemigos", pero una vez que esa barrera cae, uff, las escenas son seguidas, súper hot y muy bien escritas.. además, cumple con todos los tropos que amamos: enemies to lovers, el romance prohibido del trabajo, la cercanía forzada y una representación de una chica con curvas que me encantó, más allá del romance, la autora hace un trabajo increíble haciendo que Chicago se sienta como un personaje más en la historia.

No es solo un fondo, de verdad los lugares de la ciudad se meten en la trama y le dan una atmósfera súper rica.. también hay una historia secundaria súper importante sobre rescate de perritos, que está muy metida en cómo interactúan los personajes, es una parte hermosa y súper emotiva, pero les doy una pequeña advertencia: si a ustedes les afecta mucho el tema de los refugios o de los perritos ya mayores, tengan en cuenta que es un tema que sale bastante.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro?

Si eres fan a morir del romance deportivo, sobre todo de hockey, esto es algo que tienes que leer sí o sí.. si vives por el tropo de enemies to lovers y disfrutas un buen slow burn donde el final se siente súper ganado, te lo vas a devorar, es para lectores que prefieren historias centradas en los personajes más que en tramas súper complejas, y que les gusta una buena dosis de humor y de pasión.. que no me cayeran bien los personajes a estar totalmente metido en su historia y deseando su felicidad fue una experiencia de lectura increíble.. la profundidad que tienen, y esa química que echa chispas están manejados de una forma brutal.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, nos vemos pronto!
