I'm riding 1000km to Bangkok.

Hi folks. Im new to hive and new here in this community. I posted an intro post and my current biking adventures over in in the "exhaust" community but was disappointed to get zero engagement, I dont think anyone even read it lol. Anyway a buddy suggested I try here as this community is more active and sees more engagement.

Im currently riding my bicycle approx 1000km from Phuket to Bangkok. I posted my first day here if anyone cares to read....

So just to reiterate - this is something totally new for me. I have ridden bicycles all my life but I have never done a multi day trip like this before so I'm have a great time discovering that its pretty dam fun and pretty dam hard work. I have lived in Thailand a long time and I speak pretty OK Thai so many of the challenges that a visitor may face I dont have to. Like communication of course and knowing where and what to eat.

I have travelled up and down the length of Thailand loads of times by car and motorcycle. The first thing you notice on a bicycle is how slowly you are travelling which means your senses are heightened. When u cycle through a village you see people eyes, you smell what's cooking, you hear people laughing and talking, you see life unfolding all around you. It's almost surreal.

So anyway after my first day of just 56km from Phuket to Khao Lak (see link to post above) On the 2nd day I then had to face the toughest day of the entire trip - crossing the mountains that divide the east and west coasts of Thailand. Now it's not exactly the Himalaya but on a bicycle in the midday heat its bloody hard! I had a 12km hill climb in absolutely baking conditions. I had to stop multiple times and inevitably ran out of water. Total distance 68km.

That took me to a place called Khao Sok. From there it was downhill and thru awesome small county roads to the province of Surat Thani. The 3rd day was 100km exactly. I was super stoked that I rode 100km - it was the longest I have ever ridden a bicycle in my life and actually it was pretty easy (I even had a sneaky beer at the 70km mark)

From there I have snaked north hugging the east coast of Thailand as much as I can (roads permitting). Amazingly there was even some designated bicycle paths which I never expected to see. I have just completed the 5th day and I'm nearly 450km from my starting point. Today was the longest day (110km). Im enjoying it and I'm feeling fit. It's only 5 days so there is no huge change like weight loss or muscle gain, but I feel my endurance has increased and I'm very comfortable in the saddle - it's amazing how suddenly the 1st 30km disappears in the morning before I even think about stopping for a rest.

I have included some pics of ,my trip so far.

Are there any other long distance bikers out there? Would love to hear peoples take on this kind of adventure or hear other's stories.

Im Jobiker and I'm riding 1000km to Bangkok. Peace!

Hill climbs are the worst and I normally get off and walk lol. You have taken on a serious challenge here and will be following to see how you do. How many days have you planned for this or is it take it as it comes? happy you decided yo join the sportstalk community as engaging and reading with others is how we work. A 1000km bike ride? Wow, I am a beginner in cycling, but it's an activity that I really like to do, at my own pace, as it is not only very entertaining but also good for my health.

Loved the pics. May you have many wonderful and safe rides!

Hi Rosana! Thanks so much for that. Welcome to the world of cycling - it's really a great sport for anyone any age at any fitness level. If you live in an area where the roads are fairly quiet and encourage you to try cycling a longer distance - you will be surprised how easily you can cycle 100km in a day with a little training. I had never done long distance cycling before this trip but now I feel I could ride all day.

Great to read the 2nd entry of your trip! How are you going with the heat. One of the reasons I love surfing and diving in Thailand is because I feel it's too hot to do anything that doesn't involve being fully submerged in water!

I have to admit the heat is probably the hardest factor. I try to start as early as possible every day and then rest during the hottest part of the day. Often I bang out 70km before 11am then find a shady restaurant to eat and hopefully have a little nap - and sometimes a beer!

Yes Thailand is great. One of the best things is I never need to carry food - there is literally food for sale everywhere no matter how rural the area. Fruit shakes, noodle soups, rice and curry, sweet coffee, anything you want all the time!
