It all starts with a curiosity; The latent threat of Asteroids.

From time to time, mysterious visitors from space arrive on Earth. I am referring to meteorites. Most are small, fragments of rock that disintegrate in the atmosphere and create the beautiful shooting stars that we see in the sky, but some actually impact the surface of the planet.

One of the best-known cases is the Chicxulub event about 66 million years ago when a meteorite about 10 km in diameter impacted the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This impact generated an explosion equivalent to billions of atomic bombs, causing fires, global cooling of the planet and finally the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Another case is that of Tunguska in Siberia that occurred in 1908 where an explosion devastated about 2000 square km of forest, although the meteorite never hit, the explosion in the air was so powerful that it felled trees and generated a shock wave that was felt hundreds of kilometers away.

In 2013, a relatively small rock exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russia at an altitude of about 30 km, releasing energy equivalent to 35 Hiroshima bombs. 2 minutes later the shock wave reached the ground, damaging thousands of buildings, breaking windows and injuring about 1,500 people due to flying glass fragments.

And although these types of events are rare and seem like something out of a Hollywood movie, scientists know that at some point something similar can happen, the real question is are we prepared? Today there are surveillance programs that track objects close to the Earth and some space missions have tested techniques to divert asteroids. In 2022, NASA's DART mission intentionally impacted the dimorphic asteroid and managed to alter its orbit.

It was a truly extraordinary milestone, but it would be enough if a much larger asteroid was heading toward Earth and there was no time for second chances.
