Esta semana se anunció que la regla del bateador designado que se aplicó durante la recortada temporada del 2020 no será parte de la liga nacional para este 2021, y esto da para muchos comentarios, y aristas, por ejemplo muchos jugadores que fueron titulares la temporada pasada en el puesto de designado, quedan sin cupo regular en el lineup, por otro lado para los puristas del deporte, esto se traduce en la vuelta de las estrategias, que involucraban a este turno del lanzador, los cambios dobles, los toques de sacrifico por el lanzador, aquella práctica de algunos managers de colocar al lanzador de 8vo en vez del tradicional 9no turno en el lineup.

Entonces con la ayuda de mi fiel amiga baseball-reference pude desarrollar un cuadro donde a partir de sus estadísticas al bat se reunieron los turnos usuales que toma un bateador en una temporada regular de 162 juegos, * en otras palabras simplemente sumé sus actuaciones en varias temporadas consecutivas (alrededor de 80-100 turnos por temporada) hasta llegara unos 600 turnos*para poder reflejar el rendimiento de los lanzadores, como bateadores, en una temporada completa, cuantos homeruns podría alcanzar un lanzador? para ello hice la salvedad de tomar solo temporadas en las cuales los peloteros jugaron principalmente como lanzador, por lo que la temporada de 1919 de Babe Ruth no clasifica al igual que Otani porque tomaron muchos turnos jugando otra posición.

La primera es que aun si consideramos que se tomaron solamente temporadas en la cual el lanzador jugo principalmente como lanzador, Babe Ruth sigue siendo el mejor Bateador como lanzador por un amplio margen, solamente su OPS+ de 171 es impresionante, y si no queda líder de homeruns es porque esos turnos fueron entre 1914 y 1918 en la era de la bola muerta, sin embargo logró acumular 48 dobles, 18 triples (que para esos años era considerado batear para poder), y 20 homeruns.

Que los números de lanzadores como Gibson o Don Drysdale, no muestran su verdadero potencial con el bat, lo que se puede explicar por lo mencionado anteriormente, estos números fueron acumulados durante el transcurso de varios años, tomando sus turnos al bate cada 4 días lo que evidentemente afecta el ritmo de ellos como jugadores, se supone que si esos, hubiesen cambiado de posición su bateo mejoraría, solo miren como le fue a Babe Ruth en su cambio a los jardines
