Frühlingsgefühle & Hochwasser / Spring fever & floods

Hallo zusammen,
Fahrradtour in diesem Jahr unternommen.

Hello everyone,
bright sunshine and almost 14° degrees... spring fever is here. As my husband had to work today, my son and I decided to hop on our bikes and go for our first bike ride of the year.

The sky was almost cloudless and there were walkers, cyclists and joggers everywhere or you could see people bustling about in the gardens and everyone was enjoying the glorious weather. Oh how I have missed that. It's supposed to rain again all day tomorrow, but we've soaked up the good feeling all the more today.

During our first short stop, we noticed that the Werre had already burst its banks again and that parts of the Sielpark were flooded again. We already had severe flooding in our region at Christmas, so you can imagine how much it has rained here in the last few weeks.
Where you can see the trees sticking out of the water is where we used to have a picnic or two in the summer:

Before crossing the Werre over a bridge, we made another short stop and marveled at how wide the river had become at this point due to the high water and the speed at which it floated through the riverbed. In summer, many stand-up paddlers and canoeists enter the water at this point, which normally flows at a very leisurely pace. Now it seems like a raging torrent.

We had been on the road for quite a while now and the paths were getting muddier and muddier and were sometimes impassable as they were under water. So our bike tour almost turned into a little adventure. A few times it was so muddy and slippery that my wheels almost slipped off. I actually saw myself lying in the mud from time to time... but I was lucky and managed to stay on my bike ;)
We had to change our route a few times as the water kept preventing us from continuing.

To get back home, we wanted to cross the flood trough, assuming that it would be passable again. After the last flood at Christmas, it was actually possible to drive through here again. Unfortunately, we were wrong... we couldn't get through here either, unless we had swum.

So we had to extend our tour again and continue to the next bridge to cross the flood plain. What was supposed to be a short bike ride turned into quite a long tour, which was great fun thanks to the fantastic weather. A great foretaste of the approaching spring.
I wish you a relaxing rest of the weekend ;)

Wow despite the flood, this area has such a scenic view. I can imagine it being a really lovely picnic area. Thank you for sharing about your biking adventure. It sounded fun and a good bonding moment for you and your son. Happy Sunday!

Despite the obstacles (flood water, mud etc) you had a bike adventure with your son. That's fantastic. The area looks wonderful, by the way :)

Thanks for sharing these with us.

Way to go!
