My Actifit Report Card: May 25 2023 - Hey Joe, Three Ways

(Edited)

I don't know what made me think of this oldie from the 60s but here's Hey Joe by 3 different bands.

If you know Hey Joe at all you probably know the version by guitar hero Jimi Hendrix. He recorded his version of this song in late 1966. Apparently this song was written several tears earlier and could be some sort of combination of 3 even earlier songs. Read the Wikipedia page on Hey Joe for more on that.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi had put together his 3 man band The Jimi Hendrix Experience and they were recording their first album. Hey Joe was on it. This heavy rock / blues version of the song hit number 6 in the UK but didn't chart in the US. Later it got lots of airplay on FM Rock stations and is played on Classic Rock stations to this day.

The Leaves

Earlier in 1966 an LA rock band called The Leaves recorded a fast noisy Garage Rock version of Hey Joe. This was their third recording of the same song, the first being in 1965. This version hit number 31 in the US and went on to become a Garage Rock classic.

Violet Wing

Then in 1968 Violet Wing did a trippy psychedelic longer version of Hey Joe that almost no one knows about. It features a Theremin which was mainly used prior for creepy sound effects in horror movies. There's an organ and fuzzy guitar in there too. Check out this slow sludge heavy weird version of Hey Joe.

MY ACTIVITY

was a bike ride followed by some weightlifting and 24 pushups. I also walked around the food store. I must have been moving around after that because I got into the #10kstepsaday club again!

Have a great Friday!

Covers are already popular back then. Even I Will Always Love You which was very popular with Whitney Houston's version was original by Dolly Parton. Even Elvis Presley wanted to sing the song then.

I agree that the one from Violet Wing has some scary undertones on it.
