Prep for Upcoming Hike

new backpack & sandals

Summer has now arrived and recently one of my nephews returned from an overnight camping trip with his friends. The group of 7 young adults has never camped before and without getting into too much detail, it didn't go down too well. I'm just glad it was a camp you can park your car next to the tent site.

the tents we will be taking

This did not dampen his enthusiasm so he asked to come out on one of my hikes (away from cars) and show him 1st hand how to set up his tent (well basic camping in general). So I went around to check out what gear he had, 2 pop-up tents; a 3 man and a 4 man tent. No wonder the group slept (uncomfortably) in the cars, both tents required minor repairs.

My niece listened in and wants to come out which includes her family, no problem.

Before getting ahead of ourselves, the plan is to go on a local 8km hike to a campsite, set up camp, cook a meal, break up camp then hike out, all on the same day. Fun times indeed!

good excuse to buy more gear

Been looking at this 80 Litre backpack online for a while, the only reason I can think of having something this big is when you need to carry it for a large-sized group, sharing the load.

So now we have 2 backpacks with 3 shelter systems (2xtents 1xtarp) 2 sleep systems, 2 cooking systems. Clothing, light overnight, wet weather, and food for 5 people plus dog.

As for the sandals, this is something I saw on a Hikers Youtube channel. It's a must-try thing because I really don't like wearing boots over a long period of time.

test drive new pack and sandals

Nothing like a good nights walk down the street with a fully loaded backpack then return beside the stream in pitch black with your trusty headlamp. The only discomfort was at the start of the walk, but after fine-tuning the backpacks harness I feel I could easily walk another 15km without any breaks. The sandals work so well but I doubt their durability on rocky and steep tracks, I will be using these on our upcoming day hike.

Hoping the Covid Lockdown doesn't close us down ....
