What is Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw is a sport that is practiced in some Asian countries and is most popular in Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Indonesia. It is a sort of mixture of several sports such as tennis, volleyball and even soccer, although with some substantial differences to what you might expect.

Sepak Takraw is a very old sport that has been practiced for several centuries but with some changes throughout history. The modern version of this sport dates back to the 1800's when it began to give more shape to the sport and began to have clearer rules and regulations, because before this it was only practiced for fun.

This sport is based on another game of Chinese origin (Cuju) and similar to the Japanese "Kemari", which consists of kicking a ball from one end of the court to the other.

The ball

The Sepak Takraw ball has some special characteristics, as it needed to be different from other sports. In its beginnings the ball was made of Indian Cane, when the sport was modernized the rules made that the ball had to be made of synthetic material. Some of the characteristics that the ball must meet are: it must have 12 holes, 20 intersections, Circumference: between 42 and 44 cm for men and between 43 and 45 cm for women, Weight: between 170 g (6 ounces) and 180 g (6.3 ounces) for men and between 150 g (5.3 ounces) and 160 g (5.6 ounces) for women.

In turn, the ball can be of a single color or several colors combined, which are bright, but not detrimental to the performance of the player during the game, also it must be covered by a soft touch material to not cause so much damage at the time of impact against the player's body, also the balls must be approved by the International Federation, before being put to roll on the court.

The game

The sport is played with two teams, each with three players on the court, one of the three players on each side must be at the back of the court and must protect the court, the other two must be the forwards.

The game starts as soon as the referee whistles the beginning of the game, the game is divided into sets, the winning team of a set has the freedom to choose to take the next set, if the player does not serve the ball at the sound of the referee's whistle it will be marked as a foul and the ball will be given to the other team.

Here the Sepak has some rules similar to Volleyball, because the serve will be counted as valid, as long as it crosses the net, no matter if it touches it or not, and as long as it falls within the allowed space of the court.

Here it is as I say similar to volleyball or tennis, because if the serving team makes an error, the service is given to the opposing team. The score required to win a set is 21 points unless the score is even at 20 points per side then it will be decided by a difference of two points to win the set.

The game shall be played in two sets with a rest period of two minutes between each set. If each "Regu" as the teams are called wins a set, a third set must be played to a maximum of 15 points per set.

Only three touches of the ball are allowed to cross the ball from one side of the court to the other, and it is forbidden to touch the net while the ball is in play. Any part of the body may be used except for the hands as this is considered a foul.

Sepak Takraw is a very impressive sport because of the athletic ability of the players who practice it. It aims to become an Olympic sport and is progressing towards that goal.
