El campeón de la Next Gen es "Brandon Nakashima". [Esp - Eng]

Luego de haber llegado a semifinales el año pasado, el estadounidense Brandon Nakashima logra quizás el título más importante de su corta carrera profesional; en este caso, se trata del trofeo del novel torneo de nuevas generaciones de tenis (Next Gen ATP Finals). Un logro que llega en un momento importante, dada la temporada de altibajos que ha tenido el norteamericano este 2022; a pesar de haber alzado su primer título hace dos meses, en su ciudad natal San Diego (ATO-250).

After reaching the semifinals last year, the American Brandon Nakashima achieves perhaps the most important title of his short professional career; in this case, it is the trophy of the new tournament of new tennis generations (Next Gen ATP Finals). An achievement that comes at an important time, given the season of ups and downs that the American has had this 2022; despite having lifted his first title two months ago, in his hometown San Diego (ATO-250).

En este evento de cuatro días, Brandon compartió el equipo verde con los italianos Francesco Passaro y Matteo Arnaldi; además de su rival en la gran final, el checo Jirí Lehecka, a quien ya Nakashima había superado en la fase de grupos, algo que sirvió de preludio a lo que nos deparaba este partido definitorio. Aunque fue notable la mejora que tuvo el europeo, quien pese a haber debutado con aquella derrota, logró reponerse ante Stricker y Arnaldi, para colarse en la final.

In this four-day event, Brandon shared the green team with the Italians Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi; in addition to his rival in the final, the Czech Jirí Lehecka, whom Nakashima had already beaten in the group stage, something that served as a prelude to what this defining match had in store for us. Although it was remarkable the improvement of the European, who despite having debuted with that defeat, managed to recover against Stricker and Arnaldi, to sneak into the final.

De hecho, esos triunfos del checo incrementaron las expectativas para ese segundo choque, a realizarse este pasado sábado en el estadio Allianz Cloud de Milán. En mi anterior publicación les comentaba, sobre esas buenas sensaciones con las que llegaba Jirí y eso no se hizo esperar porque Lehecka me sorprendió con un buen quiebre al primer game, lego asegurando su servicio para irse arriba por 2-0. Estuvo jugando muy suelto y derrochando confianza al golpear su buen forehand.

In fact, those victories of the Czech increased the expectations for the second match, to be held this past Saturday at the Allianz Cloud stadium in Milan. In my previous publication I told you about the good sensations that Jirí had when he arrived and that was not long in coming because Lehecka surprised me with a good break in the first game, securing his serve to go up 2-0. He was playing very loose and wasting confidence hitting his good forehand.

Lehecka sacaría para el set, pero Brandon le negó la ventaja con un resto consecutivo hacia la línea de fondo; Nakashima se mantuvo firme en su área de ataque, aguantando los tiros rápidos del rival y proponiendo intercambio de velocidad. Este era el escenario que beneficiaba a Brandon, dado que es un especialista de pistas rápidas (cemento y césped); y esta superficie cubierta le cayó como anillo al dedo. Lehecka parecía no notar esto y se engolosinó en la pelea palo por palo, algo que no le convenía.

Lehecka would serve for the set, but Brandon denied him the advantage with a consecutive return to the baseline; Nakashima stood firm in his attacking area, holding his opponent's fast shots and proposing an exchange of speed. This was the scenario that benefited Brandon, given that he is a fast court specialist (cement and grass); and this indoor surface suited him like a glove. Lehecka didn't seem to notice this and got into a stick-for-stick fight, something that didn't suit him.

Nakashima recuperaría el break y sostenía para forzar un desempate, en el que demostraría su gran calidad de juego, con tiros imparables al pasillo corto, haciendo pagar a Jirí su falta de definición de pelotas sobre la red. Considero que Lehecka ha debido usar el drop shot, para mover hacia adelante a Brandon y sacarlo de esa zona de confort en la que se hacía cada vez más fuerte e implacable. Pero el checo parecía empecinado en los intercambios y terminó pagando por 3-4 (5-7) en 29 minutos.

Nakashima would recover the break and held to force a tiebreak, in which he would demonstrate his great quality of play, with unstoppable shots to the short corridor, making Jiri pay for his lack of definition of balls over the net. I think Lehecka should have used the drop shot, to move Brandon forward and get him out of that comfort zone in which he was becoming stronger and more relentless. But the Czech seemed stubborn in the exchanges and ended up paying for 3-4 (5-7) in 29 minutes.

El segundo set fue tan vertiginoso como el anterior, Jirí mejoró su saque y continuó en su ataque frontal, pero incluyendo una variante de revés y drive paralelos, que lograba los puntos claves para mantenerse con vida; pero seguía sin variar su repertorio y eso siempre es importante. Prácticamente no usó el slice, mientras que Brandon sí lo hizo para buscar tiempo y abrirse espacios. Por eso volvió a dominar el tie break y acertó otro golpe por 4-3 (8-6) en 30 minutos exactos.

The second set was as dizzying as the previous one, Jirí improved his serve and continued with his frontal attack, but including a variation of backhand and parallel drive, which achieved the key points to stay alive; but he still did not vary his repertoire and that is always important. He practically did not use the slice, while Brandon did it to find time and open spaces. That's why he dominated the tie break again and hit another 4-3 (8-6) in exactly 30 minutes.

Cuando tienes enfrente a un muchacho rápido y valiente, debes variarle el juego para descolocarlo; ese plan le salió muy bien a Nakashima, usando saques de 148 y luego de 211 k/h; eso es algo que te lo da la experiencia de batallar ante los mejores del circuito y es algo que le hace falta a Jirí, quizás lo único. Me gustó ver a un Lehecka que no bajaba los brazos, seguía luchando aunque con más ganas que argumentos; por eso Brandon lo recibió con otro quiebre al inicio del 3er set y eso golpea los ánimos a cualquiera.

When you have a fast and brave guy in front of you, you have to vary his game to unsettle him; that plan worked out very well for Nakashima, using serves of 148 and then 211 k/h; that is something that comes from the experience of battling against the best in the circuit and it is something that Jiri lacks, maybe the only thing he lacks. I liked to see a Lehecka who didn't give up, he kept fighting even if with more desire than arguments; that's why Brandon received him with another break at the beginning of the 3rd set and that's a blow to anyone's spirits.

Lehecka a puro corazón recuperaría el break, pero ya se notaba su cansancio, corría menos hacia los lados y con el transcurrir de los games, veía como se le terminaba el tiempo. Obviamente, ver que tus tiros de fuerza no le hacen daño al rival y te devuelve todo lo que le envías, te transmite cualquier tipo de sentimientos de que hace falta algo más para poder ganar. El checo se desinflaba ante un coteo adverso, que le daba 3 match points al resto de Brandon. Solo allí le traicionó el pulso y los nervios.

Un fallido intento de slice dejaba el tiro muy largo y Brandon alzaba sus brazos en señal de victoria; nuevamente vencía en 3 sets al checo y detenía el reloj en 79 minutos. En 5 ediciones de esta competición, es Brandon Nakashima el primer estadounidense en coronarse como maestro de la nueva generación del tenis mundial. Un premio a su consistencia, en una semana en la que disputó 9 tie breaks y ganó todos sus partidos. Merecido y trabajado título para el popular B-Nak, un talento que puede tener en este 2023 su año de explosión.

Lehecka would recover the break with pure heart, but he was getting tired, he was running less to the sides and as the games went by, he was running out of time. Obviously, seeing that your power shots do not hurt the opponent and he returns everything you send him, transmits any kind of feeling that something more is needed to win. The Czech was deflated by an adverse draw, which gave him 3 match points to the rest of Brandon. Only there he was betrayed by the pulse and nerves.

A failed slice attempt left the shot too long and Brandon raised his arms in victory; once again he beat the Czech in 3 sets and stopped the clock in 79 minutes. In 5 editions of this competition, Brandon Nakashima is the first American to be crowned as master of the new generation of world tennis. A prize for his consistency, in a week in which he played 9 tie breaks and won all his matches. A well-deserved and hard-earned title for the popular B-Nak, a talent who may have his breakthrough year in 2023.
