Sorpresivo Sousa

Uno de los torneos que se desarrolla por estos días, es el Gonet Geneva Open o torneo abierto de Ginebra; un evento categoría ATP 250 que en su vigésima edición, ha servido para ver una especie de renacimiento por parte den tenista portugués Joao Sousa, dado su complicado inicio de temporada este año, cuyas participaciones en los torneos de la gira sobre arcilla, han sido relativamente cortas.

No obstante Joao, parece haber conseguido acoplar su mejor ritmo, para superar cada escalón de una manera categórica; el portugués no ha perdido un solo set y se ha convertido en el jugador agresivo, que pocos hemos visto en sus anteriores participaciones. Su camino comenzó contra el español Pablo Andújar, seguido de Nikoloz Basilashvili, Iliá Ivashka y esta mañana, ante el francés Richard Gasquet; despachando a todos sus rivales en sets consecutivos.

Este enfrentamiento con el experimentado francés, comenzó con Joao al saque, se mantuvo parejo hasta el quinto game, dada la capacidad de respuesta del portugués, cuya movilidad de piernas le permitió alcanzar cada tiro y mantener la pelota en juego. Debo acotar que en mi opinión, la pista se nota muy rápida para ser tierra batida; ya que los botes no parecen detener el efecto de spin de la bola, incluso los tiros rasantes, hacen el pique largo y esto favorece a los tenistas de juego profundo como Sousa.

La mejor raqueta actual de Portugal, supo cómo responder a cada intento de ataque de Gasquet; y no se trató de un Richard flojo o impreciso, porque su revés a una mano parecía un latigazo, sino que Joao estaba muy rápido para atacar y defender. El partido que prometía gran paridad, por la cercanía en edad y ranking de ambos (Gasquet 35 años y puesto 75; Sousa 33 años y puesto 79); se convertía en una sola vía, por el notable dominio de las acciones para el tenista luso. Joao estaba recibiendo muy bien y acumulaba mejor promedio de puntos al resto; no parecía afectarle los drop shots de Gasquet, ni menos el intento de juego profundo; incluso Sousa lo empujaba hacia atrás con sus tiros bien posicionados al fondo, controlando la ubicación del rival.

The match that promised great parity, due to the closeness in age and ranking of both (Gasquet 35 years old and ranked 75; Sousa 33 years old and ranked 79); became one way, due to the remarkable dominance of the actions for the Portuguese tennis player. El doble 6 - 2 es prueba de ello y ahora jugará la final de mañana, ante nada menos que el campeón defensor, el noruego Casper Ruud. Otro partido prometedor, en el que se quita la presión del favoritismo, que está del lado de Casper. Ambos llegan con un buen nivel y un título a cuestas este año. Sin duda será un encuentro cerrado, donde los detalles en defensa serán determinantes. No sería para nada sorpresivo ver a Sousa, alzar su primer título sobre arcilla este año.
