El Rey del Backhand ha Regresado [Esp - Eng]

Durante esta semana se está llevando a cabo la septuagésima novena edición del ATP Masters 1000 de Roma, tercer torneo de maestros sobre superficie de arcilla y el de mayor prestigio, antes de iniciar el segundo Grand Slam del año. Una de las gratas sorpresas de este evento, es la participación del histórico tenista suizo Stanislas Wawrinka, quien ha estado trabajando en su regreso al deporte blanco, luego de más de un año de inactividad, motivado a sus lesiones.

During this week the seventy-ninth edition of the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome is taking place, the third Masters tournament on clay and the most prestigious one before the second Grand Slam of the year. One of the pleasant surprises of this event is the participation of the historic Swiss tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka, who has been working on his return to the white sport, after more than a year of inactivity, due to his injuries.

El popular Stan, inició de nuevo su ruta en el circuito, en el pasado torneo de Montecarlo y en su debut pude notarle con unos kilos de más y cierta lentitud en sus movimientos de pies; eso era de esperarse, luego de tanta inactividad pero el solo hecho que esté de vuelta en las canchas, es algo que me ilusiona y sobre todo me hace recordar, la gran calidad deportiva del suizo; este jugador sabe lo que es competir con los mejores y ha probado las mieles de haber ganado sus títulos de Grand Slams, ante los mejores, como Rafael Nadal y Novak Djokovic.

The popular Stan, began again his route in the circuit, in the last tournament in Monte Carlo and in his debut I could notice him with some extra kilos and a certain slowness in his foot movements; That was to be expected after so much inactivity, but the fact that he is back on the courts is something that excites me and above all reminds me of the great sporting quality of the Swiss; this player knows what it is to compete with the best and has tasted the sweetness of having won his Grand Slam titles against the best, such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

En mi humilde opinión, Stan Wawrinka posee el mejor golpe de backhand (revés), con el estilo a una sola mano, que pueda existir en el tenis; incluso (para mí) supera la gran estética de su compatriota Roger Federer; y eso ya es mucho decir jajaja. Esto lo afirmo por la manera como planta sus pies para la ejecución y por el efecto y dirección que le imprime a la pelota, lo que le permite sorprender a sus rivales y contraatacar la gran mayoría de tiros que recibe hacia ese flanco, incluso hay jugadores que prefieren jugarle más hacia su drive, para huir a ese raquetazo mortal.

In my humble opinion, Stan Wawrinka has the best backhand stroke, with the one-handed style, that can exist in tennis; even (for me) surpasses the great aesthetics of his compatriot Roger Federer; and that's already a lot to say hahaha. I say this because of the way he plants his feet for the execution and the effect and direction he gives to the ball, which allows him to surprise his opponents and counterattack the vast majority of shots he receives to that flank, there are even players who prefer to play more to his drive, to flee to that deadly racket.

Wawrinka actual número 361 del ranking, dijo presente este año en las instalaciones del Foro Itálico, enfrentando en su primer compromiso al estadounidense Reilly Opelka (# 17) en lo que representó su segundo duelo personal, logrando igualar y remontar el marcador 3-6; 7-5 y 6-2, avanzando a los dieciseisavos ante el joven serbio Laslo Djere (#59) y quien viene desarrollando sus habilidades de juego; no obstante Laslo representó el rival perfecto para Stan, en sus ansias por seguir recuperando su forma física y su pulso con la raqueta.

El partido mostró paridad en el primer set, con el helvético controlando los fuertes tiros del serbio, en mase a su bloqueo y slice de revés, aunque mostró poca velocidad en su drive; así que le vi en plan defensivo, solo atacando en los momentos estrictamente necesarios. Djere fue quien atacó más, luciendo su habitual fuerza con el forehand, aunque no aprovechó del todo, la debilidad en el saque de Stan. Solo la veteranía del suizo, le ayudó a solventar con un miniquiebre en el tie break, que fue decisivo, el marcador 7 - 6 (8).

The match showed parity in the first set, with the Swiss controlling the strong shots of the Serbian, based on his block and backhand slice, although he showed little speed in his drive; so I saw him in a defensive plan, only attacking at the strictly necessary moments. Djere was the one who attacked more, showing his usual strength with the forehand, although he did not take full advantage of the weakness in Stan's serve. Only the veteran of the Swiss, helped him to solve with a mini break in the tie break, which was decisive, the score 7 - 6 (8).

Ya en la segunda manga, el serbio hizo los ajustes necesarios; y aunque fue Wawrinka quien consiguió quebrar primero (al quinto game), Laslo tuvo la capacidad de remontar el marcador, apoyado en su servicio y el juego cruzado, poniendo a correr al veterano de 37 años. Y aunque Stan ganaba los puntos cortos en la red, Djere dominaba las distancias con sus tiros de fondo, eso le permitió recuperar el break y romper en el sexto y ovtavo game, el resultado de su esfuerzo le valió el 6 - 3 que alargaba el encuentro a un tercer y definitivo set.

En el tercer set, Laslo luchó por mantener la igualdad en los puntos, Stan se vio cómodo con los rallies largos, bloqueando y jugando al error del rival. Djere lowered his intensity a little bit, he didn't have the necessary dominance in his parallel shots and I thought he was worried about not being able to finish the first shots; they were even until the tenth game, where the experience of the Swiss was crucial; Stan received every serve with his backhand (there Laslo should have changed his open serve, looking for the somewhat loose drive of the rival).

El serbio cayó en el error de jugar al ritmo de Wawrinka y eso le costó un quiebre mortal. Stan se dio el lujo de ensayar con éxito, un par de drop shot desde la línea de fondo (todo un lujo); Djere parecía no percatarse que su rival estaba cómodo recibiendo de revés y casi no varió la colocación de su saque (tuvo que haber buscado la T de la cancha). Así que algo confundido, incurre en un error fatal, lanzando un tiro largo que detuvo el reloj en 2 horas con 48 minutos. Avanzando Wawrinka a los octavos de final, para verse con otro serbio, pero uno que conoce muy bien.

El partido de octavos fue totalmente dominado por Novak Djokovic; pero si alguien sabe de lo que es capaz Wawrinka en su mejor forma, es precisamente el número 1 del mundo. No obstante, Stan estaba plenamente consciente de que a su nivel actual, es muy complicado superar a Nole. Un doble 6 - 2 acabó con el sueño romano de Satnislas; un tenista que se robó los aplausos del público presente y es un atleta muy modesto y mesurado; respetuoso de sus rivales (al momento de jugar y festejar). Considero todo un privilegio verle jugar nuevamente y ojalá comience a carburar sus motores su máximo nivel; sin duda será un deleite verle jugar en Ronald Garros una vez más.

The round of 16 match was totally dominated by Novak Djokovic; but if anyone knows what Wawrinka is capable of at his best, it is precisely the world No. 1. However, Stan was fully aware that at his current level, it is very difficult to beat Nole. A double 6 - 2 ended the Roman dream of Satnislas; a tennis player who stole the applause of the audience present and is a very modest and measured athlete; respectful of his rivals (when playing and celebrating). I consider it a privilege to see him play again and hopefully he will start to rev up his engines to his highest level; no doubt it will be a delight to see him play at Ronald Garros once again.
