Resistencia Sudamericana en Portugal.

Este jueves se llevó a cabo otra emocionante jornada tenística, en las instalaciones del Club de Tenis de Estoril, de la ciudad lusa en Lisboa; correspondiente a la fase de cuartos de final, en busca de los cuatro mejores del torneo. El Millennium Estoril Open es un evento de categoría ATP 250, pero se está jugando con tanta intensidad, que pareciese uno de mayor jerarquía; sobre todo por las sorpresas y los choques entre jugadores de distintas generaciones, que han dejado de lado el tema del factor ranking.

South American resistance in Portugal.

This Thursday another exciting day of tennis took place at the Estoril Tennis Club, in the Portuguese city of Lisbon; corresponding to the quarterfinals phase, in search of the best four of the tournament. The Millennium Estoril Open is an ATP 250 category event, but it is being played with such intensity that it seems to be one of higher hierarchy, especially because of the surprises and the clashes between players of different generations, which have left aside the ranking factor.

Y a pesar de que los cuatro partidos de hoy, estuvieron a la altura y han cumplido las expectativas enalteciendo el torneo, (Auger-Aliassime vs Korda; Davidovich vs Tiafoe y Ramos vs Verdasco) he decidido centrar mi análisis en el choque entre el argentino Sebastián Báez y el francés Richard Gasquet. Dado los factores que se pusieron a prueba sobre la pista y obviamente, por mi simpatía y apoyo para con los pocos representantes latinos, en las competencias europeas que sirven de preparación del terreno, con miras al Roland Garros.

And although today's four matches were up to par and have met the expectations, enhancing the tournament, (Auger-Aliassime vs Korda; Davidovich vs Tiafoe and Ramos vs Verdasco) I have decided to focus my analysis on the clash between the Argentine Sebastian Baez and the Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Given the factors that were put to the test on the court and obviously, because of my sympathy and support for the few Latin representatives in the European competitions that serve to prepare the ground, with a view to Roland Garros.

Tuve muchas perspectivas esperanzadoras con la previa del compromiso, dado que el joven argentino de 21 años, posee un estilo aguerrido y es muy batallador en cada punto, actualmente ocupa la posición 59 del ranking y este año ha destacado desde la gira sudamericana sobre arcilla; y por el lado del francés, es un jugador experimentado y de gran trayectoria en el circuito. Además fue campeón en este torneo en el año 2015, justo con el cambio de nombre del evento. Gasquet está en el puesto 80 y a sus 35 años ha dado mil batallas, con su estilo depurado.

I had many hopeful prospects with the previous commitment, given that the young Argentine 21-year-old, has a tough style and is very battling in every point, currently ranked 59th in the ranking and this year has excelled since the South American tour on clay; and on the side of the French, is an experienced player with a great track record in the circuit. Así que esta especie de batalla de estilos y de generaciones, captó mi atención; la fortaleza y explosividad del bonarense ante la paciencia y veteranía del galo. Estas variables comenzaron a dar sus frutos en el primer set, con un Gasquet precavido pero al acecho; estudiando a su rival y ensayando variedad de tiros, que iban desde el juego profundo hasta los ocasionales drop shot; este despliegue tomó por sorpresa a un Báez muy cargado hacia el fondo (es su distancia preferida), pero que se notaba sorprendido.

So this sort of battle of styles and generations caught my attention; the strength and explosiveness of the Bonarense against the patience and veteran of the Gaul. These variables began to bear fruit in the first set, with Gasquet cautious but on the lookout; studying his opponent and trying a variety of shots, ranging from the deep game to the occasional drop shot; this deployment took by surprise a very loaded Baez to the bottom (it is his preferred distance), but he was surprised.

Sebas pudo ajustar un poco al final y rompía al sexto game, pero su juego lifteado (pelotas altas) solo le sirvió para maquillar el inevitable 6 - 3. Pero desde el mismo arranque de la segunda manga, el argentino comenzó a calentar sus motores, abarcando cada rincón de la cancha, en una muy buena defensa; además pudo corregir su servicio y hacerlo más efectivo.

Otra de las claves de su feroz remontada, estuvo en su ajuste en la recepción de servicio; entonces el Gasquet dominante que logró 4 aces en el primer set, vio como el jovencito le devolvía con fuerza y colocación, todos sus tiros. A eso le llamo activarse, Báez no se amilanó y se lanzó al ataque, obteniendo buenos quiebres en el cuarto y sexto game; además de sostener su buen nivel de drive. Richard no encontraba qué hacer, lanzaba su drive rasante al cruzado y paralelo, pero había una pared albiceleste que no le dejaba pasar.

Another key to his fierce comeback was in his service reception; then the dominant Gasquet, who scored 4 aces in the first set, saw how the youngster returned all his shots with strength and placement. But he could not be confident, because Gasquet returned the break, to retake the equality.

El francés reaccionaba y recuperaba el nivel con el que arrancó el choque; pero a estas alturas el joven gaucho se mostraba como el dueño del court; corriendo de lado a lado y atacando con desbordante seguridad, así le vi golpear la bola en el noveno game, en el que consigue romper de nuevo; este sería el momento crítico para el francés. Que lamentó las pérdidas por errores no forzados. Mientras que Báez mejoraba su primer servicio y hacía daño con sus tiros paralelos; no obstante sería con un cambio de distancia, con el que descolocaba a su contrincante, para luego acertar otro tiro tangente a la línea lateral.

Hoy el chico osado fue Sebastián Báez, quien pudo sobreponerse y sacar lo mejor de su garra tenística. El argentino fue de menos a más y su forehand al final, sonaba con una nitidez impresionante. Se convierte ahora en el único sudamericano en competencia y jugará en semifinales ante el español Albert Ramos Viñolas, a quien ha superado en las dos ocasiones que se enfrentaron este año. Otro duelo generacional prometedor y decisivo para ambos, aunque es el joven Báez quien está más motivado y enfocado. Con este logro ya se aseguró la inclusión en el top 50 y aún su camino en Estoril no temina.

Another promising and decisive generational duel for both, although it is the young Baez who is more motivated and focused. With this achievement he has already secured his inclusion in the top 50 and his road to Estoril is not over yet.
