The word "surrender" does not exist.

The expected debut of the Spanish Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells, has been full of surprises and seasoned with that constant ingredient called "drama"; The tennis player with more Grand Slams titles to his credit, has shown once again, that in his vocabulary the word "surrender" does not exist and has done it again, Rafa has achieved something that looked very difficult and was to overcome an adverse match, against the American Sebastian Korda No. 38 of the ranking and one of the best players of the new crop of young players, who has been raising his level of tennis in each presentation.

Everyone wants to see the player who, at 35 years of age, is living one of his best starts of the season, with 15 consecutive victories that translate into three titles in a row; and of course it crosses this server's mind that if Nadal has good performances in this second quarter, he could climb to the third position of the ranking (depending on the results obtained by Zverev, of course). However, it is a mere hypothesis that increases with each performance of the Spaniard and the strict sports discipline he exhibits (he was one of the first to arrive and train in the courts of the place).

As for Korda, I was expecting how he was going to play; given his great result in the first round against the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, whom he beat in straight sets. So the match against Rafa was promising and so it was hahaha. Sebas starts the actions, but a little nervous when serving, so much that he gives up the break and with the good rhythm of Nadal, who holds and then returns to break the service something shy of Korda, who is quickly down 0 - 4; great domain of the Spanish that in 28 minutes marks the 6 - 2, before an opponent who seems to receive better than what he serves.

The second set has given a total turnaround, Korda improves significantly his service and even more in his reception, despite starting down in the points, manages to recover and then breaks to take an advantage that would not let escape. In addition to the improvement of Sebas, the appearance of unforced errors and double faults, which locked Rafa in a maze, matched game with 6 - 1 in 39 minutes for Korda. The third and final set, was of improvement in the service of the Spaniard, in addition to his greater experience was key to withstand the offensive gale of his rival.

The young Korda got more into the paint and his backhand was coming faster, that strategy allowed him to corner Nadal a little, who saw how his rival grew in confidence and fluency. With that good game, I was not surprised by Sebas' break in the fifth game, but I was surprised by the break in the seventh, because now the 21-year-old American was 5-2 up and it was his turn to serve for the match. But if Sebas improved in his serve, Nadal has also improved in the rest; the big difference between these athletes is that Rafael has already been in this situation many times.

Rafa gets an improvement in his returns, by taking a couple of steps back and thus better counter the rival; that gave him results and he could do more damage, by combining his short crosscourt shots. Just like that, we went from 5 - 2 to 5 - 4 because the Spaniard has not stopped fighting to survive; it was amazing to see Rafa receiving aggressively, looking to break again, that risky way of attacking made a dent in the opponent's resistance and Korda made very costly mistakes. That slump was taken advantage of and another consecutive break for super Rafa to tie the set at 5.

Both warriors hold with bravura and the match that seemed in the pocket for Sebas, now will be decided in the tie break. But if Rafa could do it against Medvedev in Australia, why not here? The epic feat came with four consecutive points for Nadal, Korda left in the net a smash that seemed easy and then threw the ball open in the parallel, to stop the clock in 2 hours and 28 minutes [6 - 2, 1 - 6, 7 - 6 (3)]. A miraculous debut for the Spaniard, who is now in perfect balance of 16 matches with 16 victories Who would have imagined it? Not even in his best times.

¡Grande Rafa!

¡Hasta la Próxima!

Nadal will meet on Monday with the British Dan Evans, a player who can surprise anyone, for his regularity and good handling of the matches; however it has been a very suffered start for the Spaniard, who perhaps accuses the wear and tear in this tournament. In addition to the high temperatures of the Californian desert, I consider prudent a brief rest for the legendary Spanish tennis player; in view of the approaching tour on clay and that he must arrive in optimal conditions to his favorite tournaments in Montecarlo, Barcelona, Rome and Paris. But for the moment, it is a pleasure to see him fight and win. Great Rafa!

See you next time!

Saludos
