Fin de semana tenístico de punta a punta, con tres finales para el disfrute de los fanáticos. No obstante de los títulos disputados en Marsella, Río de Janeiro, Doha y Delray Beach, es el del torneo realizado en tierras de nuestros vecinos brasileños, el que mayor preponderancia tiene por su categoría ATP 500 y por el sazón que le han añadido sus finalistas, entre ellos el suramericano mejor posicionado en el ranking profesional, como lo es el argentino Diego Schwartzman, enfrentando al joven español Carlos Alcaraz, quien ha sido todo potencia y buen tenis durante esta emocionante semana.

Tennis weekend from end to end, with three finals for the enjoyment of the fans. Notwithstanding the titles played in Marseille, Rio de Janeiro, Doha and Delray Beach, it is the tournament held in the land of our Brazilian neighbors, the one that has greater preponderance for its ATP 500 category and for the spice added by its finalists, including the South American best positioned in the professional ranking, as is the Argentine Diego Schwartzman, facing the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who has been all power and good tennis during this exciting week.

El nacido en Murcia, se convierte en el cuarto tenista ibérico en levantar un título individual ATP, en lo que va de año y sigue su proyección como un atleta cuyo límite es el cielo mismo. Luego de Rafael Nadal en Melbourne Park, tenemos a Albert Ramos en Argentina, Roberto Bautista en Doha y ahora el más joven de todos, uniéndose a este selecto grupo de históricos españoles; que suman trofeos a su haber personal y que forman parte de una generación cambiante, uno que comienzan y otros en el “aparente” ocaso de su carrera, no obstante han convergido en un 2022 sorprendente.

Sin embargo y a pesar de resultado en esta final, hay que tener muy en cuenta, el gran esfuerzo del tenista argentino Diego Schwartzman, el mejor jugador latino del momento (Nº 14 del ranking) y que ya levantó el trofeo acá en Rio en el año 2018. Pero el detalle más importante, es la doble jornada que tuvo que hacer el bonaerense el día sábado, cuando motivado por las diversas suspensiones por lluvia, disputó dos partidos en fila, para poder optar al derecho de ser finalista una vez más; en primera instancia ante el experimentado Pablo Andújar y luego ante su compatriota Francisco Cerúndulo.

Carlos enfrentó a dos de los mejores jugadores italianos del momento, primero en cuartos de final con Matteo Berrettini y posteriormente, en semis a Fabio Fognini; en el primer caso fue una especie de desempate entre ambos, dado que era el tercer choque entre ellos; luego de Viena en 2021 y Australia 2022, llegaba otro momento especial para ambos.

En segunda instancia, era versus el experimentado Fognini, quien fue finalista en 2015 de este certamen, pero que tuvo su merecido trofeo de campeón en la modalidad de dobles, haciendo dupla con su coterráneo Simone Bolelli; aunque tuvo un franco enfrentamiento con Alcaraz, quien a lo largo del torneo se mostró tranquilo, sin desespero en los rallys y con una paciencia característica de los grandes campeones del circuito. Así se presentó a la final ante un desgastado Diego Schwartzman, que tuvo que disputar dos partidos consecutivos el día sábado, uno de ellos reprogramado por las constantes suspensiones por lluvia, esto sin duda hizo mella en la resistencia del “Peque” y mermó parte de sus condiciones físicas.

Diego quiso mostrar que no y quebró el segundo game del primer set, pero luego d estar arriba 2 – 0, vio en primera persona la excelsa variedad de juego de Carlos, quien pareciendo un veterano, puso en práctica un repertorio de lujo. Sobre todo un drop corto que dejó sin respuesta varias veces a Diego y se convirtió en una pesadilla. Obviamente Carlos sabía de las piernas cansadas del Peque, exprimido por su par español Pablo Andújar, un día antes. Pero lo más llamativo para este servidor, fue el disimulado juego ofensivo de Alcaraz, alternando y distribuyendo sus ataques de manera fenomenal, engañando a un Schwartzman más experimentado.

Diego wanted to show that he didn't and broke in the second game of the first set, but after being up 2 - 0, he saw first hand the excellent variety of Carlos' game, who looking like a veteran, put into practice a repertoire of luxury. Especially a short drop shot that left Diego unanswered several times and became a nightmare. Obviously Carlos knew about the tired legs of the Peque, squeezed by his Spanish peer Pablo Andujar, a day before. But the most striking thing for this server, was Alcaraz's disguised offensive game, alternating and distributing his attacks in a phenomenal way, fooling a more experienced Schwartzman.

El noveno game fue determinante para Carlos, que abre brecha con su break para luego sacar para quedarse con el primer set 6 – 4. Y aunque al inicio de la segunda manga, Alcaraz vuelve a romper, Diego lleno de orgullo recupera el break, pero luego no podría contener el vendaval tenístico de un Alcaraz con actitud de campeón. Carlos no solo superaba físicamente a Diego, sino que en el aspecto técnico se vistió de jugador dominante en el court, ejecutando un drop shot desde distintos ángulos; y que era casi imposible de contestar. Así comenzó a imponer su dominoi, moviendo a su rival a placer, para luego dejarle parado con globos muy bien ejecutados.

Un nuevo quiebre a la altura del quinto game, incrementaba la dificultad de reacción para el argentino, que pudo sumar un juego más, para disfrazar el 6 – 2 enorme, con el que Alcaraz se erigía como ganador de su tercer título ATP, sumando puntos para subir al puesto Nº 29 del ranking. Ha sido una semana brillante para el español, que se afianza entre los mejores y de una manera dominante. Aunque Diego no tuvo igualdad de condiciones en la semifinal, ha brindado un partido valiente, aunque con tiros ganadores trabajados en exceso. Esta es una temporada que pinta muy bien para el de Murcia, en apenas dos meses de lo que va de año.

Llega a su fase final la gira sudamericana, con el torneo ATP 250 de Santiago de Chile; que compartirá fecha con Dubai y Acapulco; ambos de categoría ATP 500 y contando este último, con la presencia de estrellas de la talla de Rafael Nadal y Daniil Medvedev, entre muchos otros. Se queda Schwartzman con dos finales consecutivas (Argentina y Rio), que si bien no pudo concretar un título, demostró su gallardía cuando juega en casa. Felicitaciones para Carlos, que a sus 18 años, sigue impresionando con su nuevo nivel de juego.
