Francisco Cerúndulo gritó Campeón // ATP 250 de Bastad. [Esp-Eng]

No podría resultar una sorpresa más agradable para el inicio de esta gira corta sobre arcilla (Temporada europea de verano), que la de ver avanzar en cada duelo tenístico, a un par de jóvenes latinoamericanos que han elevado su nivel para dejar en alto a su país y a todo el continente americano. Por supuesto me refiero a los argentinos Francisco Cerúndulo y Sebastián Báez; y su semana de ensueño en el Nordea Open en Bastad, Suecia.

It could not be a more pleasant surprise for the start of this short tour on clay (European summer season), than to see a couple of young Latin American players who have raised their level to leave their country and the entire american continent on a high note in each tennis duel. Of course I am referring to the Argentines Francisco Cerúndulo and Sebastián Báez; and their dream week at the Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden.

En mi publicación anterior, les comenté sobre los buenos resultados de Sebastián Báez, que a sus 21 años ya consiguió su primer trofeo en Portugal este año y llegó a todo tren a este abierto categoría ATP-250 en Bastad. El nacido en Buenos Aires y número 34 del ranking, pudo superar al español Alejandro Davidovich por 2-0 y luego hizo lo propio ante Dominic Thiem en tres sets, cortando la inspiración del austriaco en los cuartos de final.

In my previous publication, I told you about the good results of Sebastián Báez, who at 21 years of age has already won his first trophy in Portugal this year and arrived at this ATP-250 category open in Bastad. The 34th ranked player, born in Buenos Aires, was able to overcome the Spanish Alejandro Davidovich by 2-0 and then did the same against Dominic Thiem in three sets, cutting the Austrian's inspiration in the quarterfinals.

Por su parte Cerúndulo (Nº 39)impresionó con su buen ritmo de juego, exhibiendo una gran defensa y un fortísimo forehand, ingredientes que le permitieron avanzar ante jugadores como Pedro Sousa, Casper Ruud (campeón 2021), Aslán Karatsev y Pablo Carreño Busta, de quien tomó venganza deportiva por ser quien eliminaba al "Peque" Schwartzman en cuartos. Francisco de 23 años y también Bonarense, perdió un solo set en todo el torneo, ante el noruego Ruud, llegando a la final con la ilusión de levantar su primer título como profesional.

Cerúndulo (Nº 39) impressed with his good rhythm of play, exhibiting a great defense and a very strong forehand, ingredients that allowed him to advance against players like Pedro Sousa, Casper Ruud (2021 champion), Aslán Karatsev and Pablo Carreño Busta, from whom he took sporting revenge for being the one who eliminated "Peque" Schwartzman in the quarterfinals. Francisco, 23 years old and also from Buenos Aires, lost only one set in the whole tournament, against the Norwegian Ruud, reaching the final with the illusion of lifting his first title as a professional.

Al ver el avance de ambos representantes del tenis latinoamericano, además de alegría es motivo de orgullo para el deporte de nuestro continente, al destacar con su talento al superar a rivales con mejor ranking y experiencia; incluso miembros del actual top ten del escalafón. Este mérito fue logrado por ambos, al superar Cerúndulo y Báez a Ruud (Nº5) y Rublev (Nº8) respectivamente; toda una hazaña por parte de estos chavales, que ahora disputarían la final en su primer duelo como profesionales.

Seeing the progress of both representatives of Latin American tennis, besides joy is a source of pride for the sport of our continent, to highlight their talent to overcome rivals with better ranking and experience; even members of the current top ten of the ranking. This merit was achieved by both, when Cerúndulo and Báez overcame Ruud (No. 5) and Rublev (No. 8) respectively; quite a feat on the part of these youngsters, who would now dispute the final in their first duel as professionals.

El día de hoy, el inicio de las acciones estuvo en la raqueta de Cerúndulo, quien ya se ha visto las caras con Báez en torneos de categoría Challengers, con balance de 2-1 (los tres partidos sobre arcilla). Así que, si fue espectacular verles superar obstáculos para llegar al último partido, también será una batalla de buen nivel entre tenistas gauchos. Entonces fue Sebi quien pegó primero con un quiebre al primer game, aunque Fran comenzó con velocidad, su compatriota demostró estar preparado para ello.

Today, Cerúndulo, who has already faced Báez in Challenger tournaments, with a 2-1 balance (all three matches on clay). So, if it was spectacular to see them overcome obstacles to reach the final match, it will also be a good level battle between Gaucho tennis players. So it was Sebi who struck first with a break in the first game, although Fran started with speed, his compatriot proved to be ready for it.

Pero aunque Báez estuvo atacando sin cesar desde el primer minuto, incurrió en una doble falta que igualó el marcador; ver games que rondaban los 9 minutos de duración nos dice que ningún atleta cedía puntos fáciles, cada pelota era bien trabajada y eso se traducía en que, los puntos irían cayendo del lado de quien cuidara mejor los detalles, sobre todo en la defensa, ya que ambos salieron con el pulso controlado a la hora de emplear el drive, el revés y slice (pelota cortada), principales golpes sobre esta superficie.

But although Baez was attacking relentlessly from the first minute, he incurred a double fault that tied the score; watching games that lasted around 9 minutes tells us that neither athlete gave up easy points, each ball was well worked and that meant that the points would fall on the side of whoever took better care of the details, especially in defense, as both came out with a controlled pulse when using the drive, the backhand and slice (cut ball), the main blows on this surface.

La fortaleza de Báez con su derecha ha sido constante durante el torneo, eso lo sabía bien Fran, que decidió jugarle hacia su revés consecutivamente, para después cambiarle el ritmo y dirección de manera acertada. Esta estrategia de Cerúndulo, me hizo pensar que estudió mejor a su rival y por eso demostraba tener un plan de juego, algo muy importante para la mentalidad durante el partido. Sebastián Por su parte subía de manera ocasional a la red y castigaba con su potente derecha, pero desde el área del revés mostraba algo de inconsistencia.

Baez's strength with his forehand has been constant during the tournament, Fran knew that well, and decided to play him to his backhand consecutively, and then change the rhythm and direction in the right way. This strategy of Cerúndulo, made me think that he studied his opponent better and therefore showed to have a game plan, something very important for the mentality during the match. Sebastian for his part occasionally went up to the net and punished with his powerful forehand, but from the backhand area he showed some inconsistency.

Y aunque Cerúndulo es más bien un jugador de fondo de pista, ensayó un drop shot en gran forma, pero lo que estaba marcando la diferencia era su férrea defensa; ya que detuvo casi todo lo que su compañero de envió. Fran se hizo amigo íntimo de la línea paralela, la cual acarició con tus tiros del alto calibre. En el onceavo game Fran salvó hasta 3 break points, fue el momento crítico del encuentro; pero Cerúndulo se atrevió a jugar otro drop shot, para luego asegurar con una volea cruzada que dejó a Báez sin posibilidad.

And although Cerúndulo is more of a backcourt player, he tried a drop shot in great form, but what was making the difference was his fierce defense; as he stopped almost everything his partner sent his way. Fran became close friends with the parallel line, which he caressed with his high caliber shots. In the eleventh game Fran saved up to 3 break points, it was the critical moment of the match; but Cerúndulo dared to play another drop shot, to later secure it with a cross-court volley that left Báez with no chance.

Esta misma situación se le presentó a Sebastián al doceavo game; cuando salvó otros 3 puntos de quiebre a puro corazón, para luego aprovechar un error no forzado de su rival y así firmar el ti break. Sin embargo, en el desempate Cerúndulo llegaba con mayor impulso, condiciones y ganas; ya que fue mucho más tenaz al ataque (le vi más decidido). A Sebas le costaba mucho llevar el ritmo y cada vez tenía que esforzarse más para concretar sus puntos. Lamentablemente, cerró igual que aquel segundo game, con una inoportuna doble falta que detenía el reloj en 74 minutos.

This same situation presented itself to Sebastian in the twelfth game; when he saved another 3 break points with pure heart, and then took advantage of an unforced error of his opponent to sign the tiebreak. However, in the tiebreaker Cerúndulo arrived with more momentum, conditions and desire; as he was much more tenacious in the attack (I saw him more determined). Sebas had a hard time keeping the rhythm and had to work harder and harder to score his points. Unfortunately, he closed the same way as in the second game, with an untimely double fault that stopped the clock at 74 minutes.

Ciertamente Sebas lo intentó, le jugó de lado a lado pero a todas les llegó Fran (andaba muy rápido de pies), con un derroche de capacidad física envidiable. También hay que considerar el gran esfuerzo que ambos hicieron para llegar a la final, dado que se enfrentaron y superaron a lo mejor del torneo; no obstante cuando un tenista anda en esa forma física y mentalidad ganadora, resulta muy difícil para cualquier rival romper ese ritmo. Fue Francisco quien le tomó el pulso al encuentro y con dos quiebre al 3er y 5to games del segundo set; logró dominar y alzarse con la victoria.

Sebas certainly tried, he played from side to side but Fran reached them all (he was very fast on his feet), with an enviable waste of physical capacity. We must also consider the great effort they both made to reach the final, since they faced and overcame the best of the tournament; however, when a tennis player is in that physical shape and winning mentality, it is very difficult for any opponent to break that rhythm. It was Francisco who took the pulse of the match and with two breaks in the 3rd and 5th games of the second set; he managed to dominate and win the match.

El marcador fue 7-6 (4) y 6-2, en una hora con 49 minutos de partido. Termina así una gran semana para estos dos guerreros argentinos, que tras este resultado quedarán a partir de este lunes en las posiciones 30 y 31 del ranking ATP, con Francisco Cerúndulo a la cabeza, logrando su nueva mejor posición de su corta carrera deportiva. Tanto Sebastián como Francisco, serán nombres a tener en cuenta en los venideros torneos del calendario; ya que ha demostrado garra y talento de sobra.

The score was 7-6 (4) and 6-2, in one hour and 49 minutes of match. Thus ends a great week for these two Argentine warriors, who after this result will be as of this Monday in positions 30 and 31 of the ATP ranking, with Francisco Cerúndulo at the head, achieving his new best position in his short career. Both Sebastian and Francisco, will be names to keep in mind in the coming tournaments of the calendar, as it has shown grit and talent to spare.
