Ha sido una jornada tenística espectacular, la que se ha llevado a cabo el día de hoy, en los diferentes torneos masculinos desarrollados durante esta semana; en la que hemos visto desde el importante triunfo de Andy Murray vs Stéfanos Tsitsipás en Stuttgart, pasando por la confirmación de favoritismo del canadiense Félix Auger-Aliassime ante Karen Kachanov, hasta el bien luchado resultado para el ruso Daniil Medvedev, quien ha estado en una etapa de recuperación de su mejor tenis, luego de someterse a una operación por hernia.

It has been a spectacular tennis day, which has taken place today, in the different men's tournaments developed during this week; in which we have seen from the important triumph of Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas in Stuttgart, through the confirmation of favoritism of the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime against Karen Kachanov, to the well fought result for the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who has been in a stage of recovery of his best tennis, after undergoing an operation for hernia.

Daniil sigue siendo uno de los jugadores más importantes del circuito, sobre todo por su ya conocido ascenso (por segunda vez este año) al número 1 del ranking mundial; y luego de ser operado de una hernia, ha estado tanteando su regreso a las pistas, en una recuperación que ha sido lenta, pero que con estos resultados queda demostrado que va en el camino correcto. El ruso llegó como primer sembrado a la hierba holandesa y luego de superar un duro escollo, en el francés Gael Simon, se enfrentaba al tenaz bielorruso Iliá Ivashka Nº 49.

Daniil continues to be one of the most important players on the circuit, especially for his well-known rise (for the second time this year) to No. 1 in the world ranking; and after undergoing surgery for a hernia, he has been testing his return to the courts, in a recovery that has been slow, but with these results it is demonstrated that he is on the right track. The Russian arrived as the top seed to the Dutch grass and after overcoming a tough obstacle, in the French Gael Simon, he faced the tenacious Belarusian Ilya Ivashka No. 49.

La propuesta del partido era simple, Iliá venía con buen ritmo luego de vencer al norteamericano Mackenzie McDonald por 2 - 1 y al finlandés Emil Ruusuvuori por 2 - 0; demostrando su valía cobre superficies rápidas y sobre todo en el césped, donde los piques de la bola son bajos. Mientras que para Daniil, era el momento perfecto para medir sus fuerzas, luego de par de intentos fallidos sobre superficies lentas. Así que con tal preámbulo, las acciones iniciaron con Ivashka el servicio (Extraño que no se ven las banderas en el contador, por ser lo dos países involucrados en el conflicto armado contra Ukrania este año).

The proposal of the match was simple, Iliá came with good rhythm after defeating the American Mackenzie McDonald by 2-1 and the Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori by 2-0; proving his worth on fast surfaces and especially on grass, where the ball's picks are low. En lo personal, me gusta mucho el golpeo por parte de Daniil, con ese movimiento de forehand con muñequeo, que roza y envuelve la pelota, provocando un efecto que genera un pique distinto sobre la superficie; mientras que Ivashka coloca ese drive contenido, que saca con el brazo a media carrera y que sale (lógicamente) con menor efecto. Estos detalles se tradujeron en un primer set sin quiebres, lo que habla de la paridad de fuerzas para ambos atletas. Pero en el doceavo game, Meddy usa una drop con subida a la red, para cortar el ataque rival y solventar la amenaza de quiebre.

Personally, I really like Daniil's stroke, with that forehand movement with wrist, which grazes and wraps the ball, causing an effect that generates a different pique on the surface; while Ivashka places that contained drive, which he serves with his arm in mid-stroke and that comes out (logically) with less effect. These details resulted in a first set without breaks, which speaks of the parity of forces for both athletes. But in the twelfth game, Meddy uses a drop with a rise to the net, to cut the opponent's attack and solve the threat of a break.

El tie break fue determinante, dada la paridad de ambos competidores, no obstante era el bielorruso quien tomaba la delantera, gracias a su ataque de drive paralelo y su respuesta solvente al juego cruzado de Daniil. Pero el ruso acudiría a su fuerte saque, para recuperar puntos e igualar a 3, para luego volver a ejecutar su drop shot y tomar ligera ventaja, incluso Meddy tendría set point al resto, evitado por un ace de Iliá; que luego sacaba su casta de sangre fría para quedarse con un rally de 41 golpes ¡Qué barbaridad! Al final Daniil concretaba par de puntos seguidos y se quedaba con el set por 7-6 (8) en 64 reñidos minutos.

The tie break was decisive, given the parity of both competitors, however it was the Belarusian who took the lead, thanks to his parallel drive attack and his solvent response to Daniil's crosscourt game. Ya en la segunda manga, uego de un comienzo bastante parejo en puntos, el slice defensivo de Iliá, no sería suficiente para contener el ataque mejorado de Daniil; Medvedev parecía tomar mejores decisiones en sus tiros, para acorralar a su rival y evitar el contraataque. Sobre todo cuando Ivashka intentó subir a la red, Meddy le negaba opciones al conseguir mejor efecto en la pelota y el bielorruso dejó varios golpes en la malla. Medvedev quiebra el sexto y luego sostiene, cerrando los ángulos y castigando la falta de empuje rival.

Already in the second set, after a fairly even start in points, Ilya's defensive slice would not be enough to contain Daniil's improved attack; Medvedev seemed to make better decisions in his shots, to corner his rival and avoid the counterattack. Especially when Ivashka tried to go up to the net, Meddy denied him options by getting better spin on the ball and the Belarusian left several hits on the net. La etapa crítica del encuentro llegaría en el noveno y décimo games, cuando Ivashka intentaba remontar para forzar un tercer set, pero un Daniil con mayor trayectoria y convicción en su estrategia, le negaba la remontada; primero defendiendo su servicio con tiros cruzados al fondo y luego recibiendo a la perfección, aprovechando el nerviosismo del bielorruso en los puntos decisivos. Medvedev logró quebrar en cero ese décimo game, para cerrar el encuentro y detener el reloj en 1 hora y 50 minutos, con pizarra de 7-6 (8) y 6 - 4.

The critical stage of the match would come in the ninth and tenth games, when Ivashka tried to come back to force a third set, but a Daniil with greater trajectory and conviction in his strategy, denied him the comeback; first defending his serve with crosscourt shots to the back and then receiving to perfection, taking advantage of the nervousness of the Belarusian in the decisive points. Medvedev managed to break in zero that tenth game, to close the match and stop the clock in 1 hour and 50 minutes, with a slate of 7-6 (8) and 6 - 4.

Ahora el ruso se medirá en semifinales, ante el veterano francés Adrián Mannarino, campeón defensor del torneo y quien vive una semana de ensueño en tierras holandesas; y que por su condición de zurdo aguerrido, representa todo un reto para Medvedev, que debe tener pesadillas ante rivales sinestros al estilo Nadal jajaja. Sin duda la gira de tenis sobre hierba, estará llena de emociones y grandes resultados, por lo que debemos tener presentes al ruso, sobre todo en su condición de nuevo monarca del ranking mundial a partir de este lunes.
