Primer Título como Nº 1 para Medvedev // [Esp - Eng]

La madrugada de este domingo se disputó la gran final del torneo ATP-250 de Los Cabos, un novel evento que vio en su sexta edición, una de las mejores versiones del ruso Daniil Medvedev, quien cumplió con su estatus de primer preclasificado y logró coronar nuevamente un título, desde aquella noche dorada del 12 de septiembre, en la que alzó el primer trofeo de Grand Slam de su carrera profesional. Debieron transcurrir casi 11 meses para que "El pulpo" gritara campeón.

The grand final of the ATP-250 tournament in Los Cabos took place early Sunday morning, a novel event that saw in its sixth edition, one of the best versions of the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who fulfilled his status as the first pre-qualifier and managed to crown again a title, since that golden night on September 12, when he lifted the first Grand Slam trophy of his professional career. It took almost 11 months for "The Octopus" to shout champion.

El esfuerzo le ha valida la pena y en un momento en el que urgía de triunfos, dado que Daniil no pudo concretar en las finales en el Masters de Paris Bercy y las finales de la ATP en Turín, ambos torneos disputados a finales del año pasado. Luego el histórico Rafael Nadal, en uno de sus más épicos partidos, le negó el segundo "Majors" a Meddy en Australia; culminando también en segundo lugar, en los recientes torneos de s`Hertstogenbosch y Halle, en Países Bajos y Alemania respectivamente.

The effort has been worth it and at a time when he was in need of victories, given that Daniil could not make it to the finals of the Paris Bercy Masters and the ATP Finals in Turin, both tournaments held at the end of last year. El rival del ruso no pudo ser mejor, tratándose del británico Cameron Norrie, quien fuese el ganador de la edición anterior en la península azteca; y quien tuvo otra gran semana deportiva en los Cabos. logrando sendos triunfos ante C. Tseung por 2-0; R. Albot por 2-0 y Félix Auger Aliassime por 2-1. Sin embargo, el zurdo nacido en Sudáfrica vio truncado el sueño del bicampeonato, al encontrarse por segunda vez ante el moscovita, quien estuvo sencillamente implacable desde la larga distancia, su zona predilecta en el fondo de la pista.

The Russian's opponent could not have been better, being the British Cameron Norrie, who was the winner of the previous edition in the Aztec peninsula; and who had another great sporting week in Los Cabos, winning against C. Tseung by 2-0; R. Albot by 2-0 and Felix Auger Aliassime by 2-1. However, the South African-born left-hander saw his dream of a second title dashed when he found himself facing the Muscovite for the second time, who was simply implacable from long distance, his favorite area at the back of the court.

El encuentro estuvo igualado hasta el séptimo game, en el que Meddy logró concretar el quiebre que estuvo asomando desde los juegos anteriores; y algo que pude notar desde las primeras de cambio, fue la soltura y confianza que estuvo ejecutando Daniil, que incluso hizo tiros de feria con backhands en suspensión hacia la paralela, o sus letales ejecuciones en carrera hacia adelante; cuya efectividad es bien conocida por todos sus rivales. Mientras que por el lado de Cameron, se le notaba incómodo en las ejecuciones, dado que su rival se las estuvo poniendo muy difícil.

The match was evenly matched until the seventh game, in which Meddy was able to make the break that had been looming since the previous games; and something that I could notice from the first change, was the ease and confidence that Daniil was executing, which even made fair shots with backhands in suspension to the parallel, or his lethal executions in race forward; whose effectiveness is well known by all his rivals. While on Cameron's side, he was uncomfortable in the executions, since his rival was making it very difficult for him.

No obstante Norrie tomó riesgos y acertó en el intento, con pelotas bien ceñidas al paralelo del revés del ruso; y precisamente con esta estrategia logró salvar hasta 3 puntos para set , haciando que Meddy incurriera en errores no forzados dejados en la red; por un momento Daniil se vio maniatado desde el backhand y hacia allí insistió el británico, demostrando que había identificado ese lado débil. Ese esfuerzo se tradujo en el quiebre del décimo game, un momento en el que ambos atletas se veían respirando por la boca y exhaustos.

However, Norrie took risks and succeeded in the attempt, with balls close to the parallel of the Russian's backhand; and precisely with this strategy he managed to save up to 3 points for set, making Meddy incur in unforced errors left in the net; for a moment Daniil was manhandled from the backhand and there insisted the Briton, showing that he had identified that weak side. That effort resulted in the break in the tenth game, a moment in which both athletes looked mouth-breathing and exhausted.

Fueron momentos en el que la batalla se tornó más física que técnica; y fue a Cameron a quien le fallaron las piernas. Medvedev puso en práctica una combinación de pelotas largas y cortas, para también advertir ese punto débil en Norrie (Su movilidad). Así Medvedev logró su segundo quiebre al onceavo game; y para el siguiente game, pudo evitar los ataques del talentoso zurdo, que no parecía aguantar el ritmo lado a lado, implementado inteligentemente por Daniil en el momento más exigente.

There were moments in which the battle became more physical than technical; and it was Cameron whose legs failed him. Medvedev put into practice a combination of long and short balls, to also notice that weak point in Norrie (his mobility). Thus Medvedev got his second break in the eleventh game; and for the next game, he was able to avoid the attacks of the talented left-hander, who did not seem to hold the pace side by side, cleverly implemented by Daniil at the most demanding moment.

El 7-5 en 56 minutos fue duro para ambos, pero en mayor grado de desgaste para el británico, que al inicio del segundo set se mostró extenuado. El cansancio de Norrie, sumado al tenis implacable de Daniil, fue algo devastador en la pista. Mientras veía el partido convertido en un tren de una sola vía, creo haberle dicho mentalmente a Cameron que utilizara más el slice y el drop shot; y dejara de golpear con fuerza, los tiros cortos que usó Daniil para hacerlo correr hacia adelante y atrás, pero era solo cuestión de tiempo.

The 7-5 in 56 minutes was hard for both, but in a greater degree of wear and tear for the Briton, who at the beginning of the second set was exhausted. Norrie's fatigue, coupled with Daniil's relentless tennis, was devastating on the court. As I watched the match turn into a one-track train, I think I mentally told Cameron to use more slice and drop shot; and to stop hitting hard, short shots that Daniil used to make him run back and forth, but it was only a matter of time.

Por más que lo intentó, Camerón no podía evitar los quiebres al primer, tercer y quinto games; y en contraparte Medvedev no tuvo peligro con su servicio, incluso ensayó tiros cruzados cortos y al fondo; todo le salía bien hasta el punto de hacerme sufrir cuando veía al británico correr desde el fondo (con notable sobre esfuerzo). De hecho, el punto para campeonato, fue recibido sin balance por Cameron, que solo la echó fuera para marcar el rosco, la pizarra marcaba el 7-5 y 6-0 en 80 minutos de partido.

No matter how hard he tried, Cameron could not avoid the breaks in the first, third and fifth games; and on the other hand, Medvedev had no danger with his serve, he even tried short crosscourt and groundstrokes; everything was going well for him to the point of making me suffer when I saw the Briton running from the back (with remarkable overexertion). In fact, the point for the championship, was received without balance by Cameron, who only threw it out to mark the donut, the board marked 7-5 and 6-0 in 80 minutes of match.

Definitivamente ha sido muy positiva la participación del ruso en el evento mexicano, que va en crecimiento con miras a colocarse entre los mejores de la categoría ATP 250 en Latinoamérica. Sumar estos 250 puntos son claves para mantenerse en la cima de la clasificación mundial. Luego de cerrar esta semana sin perder un solo set, Medvedev coge confianza de cara a la gira norteamericana. Las pistas de superficie dura, son en las que su juego se hace más efectivo; sin duda Daniil ha vuelto a saborear el triunfo en el momento indicado. Veo el nombre de Medvedev como favorito en cada torneo que participe. Felicidades al número 1.

The Russian's participation in the Mexican event has definitely been very positive, which is growing with the aim of becoming one of the best in the ATP 250 category in Latin America. Adding these 250 points are key to stay at the top of the world rankings. After closing this week without losing a single set, Medvedev is gaining confidence ahead of the North American tour. The hard courts are where his game is most effective; no doubt Daniil has tasted victory again at the right time. I see Medvedev's name as a favorite in every tournament he participates in.
