Una de los factores que ameniza cualquier torneo deportivo son la sorpresas en los resultados; esa especie de ruptura del libreto de lo que se espera, es lo que aviva la llama de la fanaticada, que espera nuevos retos y enfrentamientos que saquen lo mejor de cada atleta; en esta edición número 135 del Wimbledon, el mayor y más emblemático de los torneos grandes, esta regla no es la excepción, dado que se ha producido marcadores que representan la eliminación de unos; y la clasificación para otros.

One of the factors that enliven any sports tournament are the surprises in the results; that kind of break from the script of what is expected, is what fuels the flame of the fans, who expect new challenges and confrontations that bring out the best of each athlete; in this 135th edition of Wimbledon, the largest and most emblematic of the major tournaments, this rule is no exception, since there have been scores that represent the elimination of some; and the classification to others.

Luego de su sonado triunfo en casa (ATP 250 Libema Open), el holandés Tim Van Rijthoven vuelve a la escena estelar del tenis, esta vez en el máximo evento tenístico sobre hierba del circuito profesional, como lo el popular "torneo de las fresas con crema", en el mítico All England Tennis Lawn Tennis Club de Londres; este representa el escenario soñado para cualquier tenista profesional y con tantas emociones juntas, no es extraño imaginar lo que puede sentir un joven inexperto en tan enigmático estadio deportivo.

After his resounding triumph at home (ATP 250 Libya Open), the Dutch Tim Van Rijthoven returns to the stellar tennis scene, this time in the top professional grass court tennis event, the popular "strawberries and cream tournament", at the legendary All England Tennis Lawn Tennis Club in London; this represents the dream scenario for any professional tennis player and with so many emotions together, it is not strange to imagine what a young inexperienced player can feel in such an enigmatic sports stadium.

Tal cual sucedió en Rosmalen hace tres semanas, Tim recibió una invitación para participar en su segundo torneo sobre césped (debido a su bajo ranking profesional), pero que por su resultado anterior (Campeón ante Medvedev), lo tiene más que merecido. Actualmente el nacido en Roosendaal ocupa el puesto 104 del escalafón, pero no ha tenido problemas para enfrentar y superar a jugadores de mayor rango y recorrido, algo que lo ha convertido en el centro de la atención, cada vez que entre a una cancha.

As it happened in Rosmalen three weeks ago, Tim received an invitation to participate in his second grass-court tournament (due to his low professional ranking), but because of his previous result (Champion against Medvedev), he more than deserves it. The Roosendaal-born player is currently ranked 104th in the rankings, but he has had no problems to face and beat higher ranked players, something that has made him the center of attention, every time he enters a court.

Después de su semana perfecta en el césped de S`Herstgenbosch, Tim se mantuvo entrenando con miras a Wimbledon y su invitación ha sido más que enaltecida, por sus positivos resultados durante su debut ante el argentino Federico Delbonis, a quien luego de un reñido primer set con tie break, logró impartir su ritmo de tenis fuerte y controlado, para alzarse con una contundente victoria de 3 sets a cero. En su segundo compromiso el día de hoy, se enfrentó al gigante estadounidense Reilly Opelka, en un choque de fuerzas.

After his perfect week on the grass of S`Herstgenbosch, Tim kept training for Wimbledon and his invitation has been more than exalted by his positive results during his debut against the Argentine Federico Delbonis, to whom after a close first set with tie break, he managed to impart his rhythm of strong and controlled tennis, to win a resounding victory 3 sets to zero. In his second match today, he faced the American giant Reilly Opelka, in a clash of forces.

En realidad, no había visto una batalla de aces desde los choques de Reilly contra Isner, pero Tim es una caja de sorpresas, porque le plantea buena lid a cualquier rival en la pista. Nuevamente el primer set, en una guerra de tiros rápidos, fue determinante; y la fortaleza del holandés inclinó la balanza en su favor, con apenas un quiebre al noveno game, para luego cerrarlo por 6-4 en solo 32 minutos. Pero el número 18 del ranking, no se quedaría de brazos cruzados y demostraría su fortaleza principal, el saque. No obstante tuvo un detalle que le afectó constantemente.

Y es que Opelka incurriría en un extraño error de servir y dar un paso largo hacia a delante, cayendo casi un metro dentro de la pista y quedando a merced del tiro a contrapié y de las pelotas largas; algo que pudo aprovechar Tim, que estuvo muy fino al momento de subir a la red. Este estilo de atacar en los primeros golpes, es característico de juegos en césped, ya que las voleas cortadas hacen el pique muy bajo y resulta difícil levantarlas para mantenerlas en play; entonces Van Rijthoven se convirtió en un experto de esta técnica.

Opelka would make a strange mistake of serving and taking a long step forward, falling almost a meter inside the court and being at the mercy of the backhand shot and long balls; something that Tim could take advantage of, who was very fine at the time of going up to the net. This style of attacking in the first strokes, is characteristic of lawn games, since the cut volleys make the pique very low and it is difficult to lift them to keep them in play; then Van Rijthoven became an expert of this technique.

Aunque Reilly tampoco pudo descifrar el fuerte servicio de Tim, la segunda, tercera y cuarta manga se definió en el desempate (Tie break); en el segundo Reilly pudo establecer una pequeña ventaja que Tim estuvo a punto de romper, sin embargo el peloteo paralelo del norteamericano, surtió un breve efecto que le alcanzó para cerrar en 50 minutos por 7-6 (8); mientras que en el tercero, vimos juegos con puntajes al extremo, a punto de quebrar para Reilly, pero siempre salvados por la frialdad en los momentos decisivos para Tim.

Although Reilly also could not decipher Tim's strong serve, the second, third and fourth sets were defined in the tie break; in the second set Reilly was able to establish a small advantage that Tim was about to break, however the parallel rallies of the American, had a brief effect that was enough to close in 50 minutes by 7-6 (8); while in the third, we saw games with extreme scores, about to break for Reilly, but always saved by the coolness in the decisive moments for Tim.

El tie break del tercer set, también se decidió por encima del puntaje tope (7(9) - 6(7); pero el saque con tercer y quinto golpe de Reilly no eran suficientes para contener la potencia del tulipán, que no le teme al juego frontal porque ya sabe lo que significan los rallys veloces (lo hizo con Félix, Fritz y Medvedev); así que Opelka necesitaba algo más. Eso era el preciado quiebre, pero de las 6 ocasiones que tuvo, Reilly no pudo concretar ninguna, porque parecía no ver, ni manejar el poderoso saque rival.

The tie break of the third set was also decided over the top score (7(9) - 6(7); but Reilly's third and fifth serves were not enough to contain the power of the tulip, who is not afraid of the front game because he already knows what fast rallies mean (he did it with Felix, Fritz and Medvedev); so Opelka needed something more. That was the precious break, but out of the 6 chances he had, Reilly could not make any of them, because he seemed not to see, nor handle the powerful opponent's serve.

Para colmo de males, las dobles faltas de Tim fueron desaprovechadas por Opelka, que justo cuando tuvo bola de quiebre, dejó sendos errores no forzados en la red (su estatura le dificultaba ejecutar el movimiento de abajo hacia arriba, para darle efecto a la bola). "Esto es una mera apreciación por parte de este autor"; para que Tim tenga tan poca experiencia, resulta muy astuto para leer los errores del contrario, sobre todo cuando acertó sus saques en la caja de servicio (Cortos), fuera del alcance del espigado Reilly.

To make matters worse, Tim's double faults were squandered by Opelka, who just when he had a break point, left two unforced errors at the net (his height made it difficult for him to execute the down-and-up motion to put spin on the ball). "This is merely an assessment on the part of this author"; for Tim to be so inexperienced, he is very astute at reading his opponent's errors, especially when he hit his serves into the service box (short), out of the reach of the lanky Reilly.

Y aunque el nacido en Michigan no recibía quiebres en su conocido "Servicio cohete", tampoco lograba romper el saque de Van Rijthoven, por lo que la curta manga transcurrió al ritmo de la alternabilidad del saque; son obstante, en el tercer tie break se repetía el mejor desempeño de Tim, que pudo recibir mejor al resto, logrando el preciado mini quiebre (Opelka volvía a quedar expuesto, con ese paso adelante luego de servir). Y luego dejaba el tiro en la red de nuevo, para ceder y quedar eliminado, en 3 horas y 5 minutos de partido, que demuestra la fortaleza del holandés en los momentos de la verdad.

And although the Michigan-born player did not receive breaks in his well-known "Rocket Service", he also failed to break Van Rijthoven's serve, so the fourth set was spent at the rhythm of the alternation of the serve; however, in the third tie break Tim's best performance was repeated, who was able to receive the rest better, achieving the precious mini break (Opelka was again exposed, with that step forward after serving). And then he left the shot in the net again, to concede and be eliminated, in 3 hours and 5 minutes of match, which shows the strength of the Dutchman in the moments of truth.

Fue un gran partido, definido con pequeños detalles durante cada set. Es perceptible el potencial de este joven holandés, que en el primer Grand Slam de su vida, se toma muy en serio cada partido, indistintamente si es zurdo (Delbonis) o derecho (Opelka); luce muy concentrado en los conteos cerrados y no duda en ejecuciones arriesgadas para resolver los puntos decisivos. Su próximo duelo es mañana ante el georgiano Nikoloz Basilashvili N°26; y será interesante verle contra otro estilo de juego, pare medir sus habilidades. Sin duda, cada escalón representa una nueva oportunidad de aprendizaje y Van Rijthoven es un nombre a tener en cuenta esta temporada.

It was a great match, defined by small details during each set. It is perceptible the potential of this young Dutchman, who in the first Grand Slam of his life, takes very seriously every match, indistinctly if he is left-handed (Delbonis) or right-handed (Opelka); he looks very concentrated in the close counts and does not hesitate in risky executions to solve the decisive points. His next match is tomorrow against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili N°26; and it will be interesting to see him against another style of play, to measure his skills. Without a doubt, every step represents a new learning opportunity and Van Rijthoven is a name to watch out for this season.
