This Saturday afternoon, I had the opportunity to follow in parallel, the games corresponding to the semifinals of the men's singles category, in the tennis tournament of the moment, as it is the Cincinnati Masters 1000. The positive thing about both matches is that none of the players kept anything to themselves, they gave their maximum effort and the issue of unforced errors is something typical of each match. I say this because there is a lot of demand with Daniil Medvedev, for holding the number 1 ATP ranking, and although he has just won in Los Cabos, the fans seem to forget very quickly.

The match between the Russian and the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas was certainly framed or defined by Meddy's mistakes, however, both he and his opponent gave me great attacking and defensive plays, worthy of an early final. To see the No. 1 compete against a No. 7 who is on fire and who needs titles to stay in the top ten is a privilege. Especially when Daniil started breaking the Athenian in the first game; his pressure from the rest and his excellent defense from the start reminded me of this year's semifinal in Australia, where Meddy advanced.

But if Medvedev came launched and prepared, Tsitsipas proved to be at the height of the commitment he had in front of him, with break down against the current monarch of the ranking (and who beats him in the personal duel 7 to 2). Stefanos assumed an attacking attitude, going up to the net to execute an effective volley and above all, his one-handed backhand (which in my opinion is constantly improving), to be able to break the baseline defense, which Meddy uses very well to tire his opponents. Seeing this, it dawned on me that this would be a competitive match.

The first set climaxed with a break back for Stefanos (in the sixth game), who had the mental capacity to be patient against such a hostile attacker as Medvedev; the octopus looked like a watering can, launching each attack to different areas of the court, so to endure that and to be able to open spaces to place his shots, was a feat for the Athens-born player. In that instant, I put myself in Daniil's shoes, as I imagined thinking what he might have in mind: If I have an opponent that my various attacks don't hurt, now what can I do?

From the tie-break on, both athletes held their respective serves at all costs, taking the set to a tie-break. In that instance, again the control of the Greek was present, who looked like a colt wanting to gallop cross-country, but was preventatively restrained by his desire to stay in the match. That was my reading before the use of the defensive slice (cut shot) that the Greek applied, instead of wanting to hit with power towards the lines; then when he did use the inverted crosscourt drive, he got the expected reward, the 7-6 (6) in 61 minutes of battle.

Daniil would not give up and would open up again with another break in the 1st game of the second set; and then he would repeat in the 5th. I think that Medvedev did his best to impose his rhythm, that is Meddy's true potential and so he swept his opponent in 45 minutes, to sign the 6-3. But the third set was crucial because Titsipas would not allow a break of serve and for his part, the Russian seems to have reached the limit of his accelerator. While it is true that Medvedev hit some great shots, the difficulty of which made them impressive, Steff kept control of the rallies and the actions.

In the end I found it ironic, that the Greek's main strength was patience; of course he had the stamina and physical power, but that's something I already know in him haha. That break of Tsitsipas in the 6th game was epic and crucial at the same time, like when there are 30 seconds to the bell in the last round; and the contenders forget the script and give everything. They were rallies of great speed and from corner to corner; then Medvedev left the shot in the net and ends up conceding at a peak moment. Then Steff held and waited to close with his serve.

That last attack on the third stroke was authoritative; Tsitsipas won that set 6-3 and stopped the clock in 2 hours and 23 minutes, to earn the right to play his first final in this important Masters tournament. His status as the 7th best racket in the world, gives him a wide favoritism to win his third Masters, but first he must fight against the young Borna Coric. The Croatian is the revelation of the tournament and is an opponent that cannot be neglected. Coric is ranked 196th and has assured himself of moving up to the top 50 by tomorrow. The grand final is this afternoon and my expectations are high because both are fighting relentlessly on every point.

I think the first games of each set will be crucial, although both Stefanos and Borna, know what it is to come back in their previous commitments, so the competitiveness and emotions will be guaranteed in this second owner between the two. Duel that brings a taste of revenge for Coric, for having had to leave due to injury on that occasion Can the Croatian give the final blow? It is very likely, but without leaving aside the power and control of the Greek.

May the best man win!

Saludos
