My Actifit Report Card: March 28 2022

Productive writing and editing day. Five thousand words written on an essay (which will serve as the basis for the next book), fleshed out and reorganized a couple sections while editing, and generally just got a lot done.

It’s a Monday. I’m not sure what to say. Not a lot of fun stuff going on, just listening to a couple podcasts and getting recharged for the week.

One thing that’s important when you’re writing as much as I am is to make sure you’re doing a good job. I have a rule–no writing just to write. I have to have some idea, and even if I get to the point where I start just wanting to be done with it (as a 5000 word essay will make one do) I have to start with passion.

The results of this approach vary depending on how you look at them, but I’ve adopted a two-prong system to make sure I’ve got some productivity.

The first is to write with passion on something every day. If that’s an existing project, a new project, or whatever, I do it. That’s something I start any time in the day.

The second is to work on a major project for at least an hour each day, usually at the end of the day. I’m sort of a mornings and evenings type; mid-days just don’t do it for me.

That’s been pretty useful to do stuff. I give myself some days off on the obligation if I do some passionate writing. For instance, I didn’t make myself do any editing work on this book yesterday because I’ve been working through it for a couple weeks now and I found myself stressing about it.

There’s also the practical effect here that since I have a goal of writing a million words this year the passion-writing is a good way to keep forward progress (or at least prevent major back-sliding on progress compared to where I’m supposed to be) even when I’ve been doing other stuff with my working time.

I felt better today, though I’m not exactly radiating sunshine and rainbows. I’m still having some pain and really feel rough when I’m moving around, which continues to incentivize low levels of activity. If it weren’t for the fact that this thing comes and goes, I’d try to just power through it, but I need to sleep at night and worsening symptoms by accident when trying to make things better is a bad idea.
