My Actifit Report Card: September 29 2021

I was walking along with Doggie today when the neighbor started up a conversion with me. He told me I should really ride with a helmet on when I'm on my e-bike, or something like that.

We talked for a while and I tried to convince him that there were much more important things to be concerned with. No such luck. He seemed honestly concerned with my well being.

We never wore helmets when I was a kid, they were not even available. I never had anything really serious happen although I broke both my arms in a bicycle accident once.

I think I ride much safer now that I'm older.

In some ways riding with a helmet on gives me a false sense of security and I don't focus as much on what the other cars are doing. It is also kind of a pain to deal with when you are just going down to the store on a short trip.

Anyhow, the conversation made me worried. When your worried your much more likely to get in a wreck. My son borrowed my helmet so I drove the car down to the disc golf course.

You should be more worried about all the extra CO2 that I put in the air from not riding my e-bike. LOL.

My precious Volt disc almost got dunked in the river on hole eight today:

(Photo was modified in GIMP.)

I was a bit worried about the wind but a Youtube person said the Volt is a great headwind fighter. I've found it to be pretty stable so I threw it like I usually do and it turned and burned in the headwind. I should have stabled up to something like the Fireball because the wind was blowing so hard, but it did fade back to the riverbank.

I found it about five feet from the water on a really muddy slope. As I reached down precariously with some tree branches I could just see myself taking a tumble into the river.

Nope, I got my disc back. No need for new legislation requiring helmets and life jackets while disc golfing near rivers... Yet anyway, lol.

Thanks for reading! I always value your support and comments. The pictures were taken by me with my Galaxy S9+. Text and graphics copyright lightsplasher & litesplasher.

Isn't it awful when someone plants something in your head that you were going happily along without? We didn't have helmets either, my neighborhood full of kids. We all road bikes, had accidents and nobody died. Sure, I know there must have been exceptions and that would be very sad, but if only we could know the percentages, I bet they would have been pretty low.

One day, as an adult, I was coming up on an intersection that was only a two-way stop and that stop sign was not in my direction. Fortunately I wasn't going the speed limit, because a young boy, WAY old enough to know better, flew out from the side street where the stop sign was and crossed directly in front of me. My mind instantly went to how stoopid he was to chance such a thing and then realized it was one of my nephews who lived about 5 or 6 blocks from there. One of those things that gives one pause. You just never know.

A helmet isn't going to save you if you're stoopid....LOL

That's good advice from your friends, because helmets are very useful for protecting our heads if something happens.
Because preventing is better.

In life, I think: We should be ourselves instead of pretending to be happy being someone else. 👌

Always please your best modifications. 🙏

Good advice, I think so too. I believe that usually you know what feels best for you to do.

Funny thing is when I was a kid, not a single one of ever would have considered a helmet. Honestly we felt that was for kids that were handicapped.
Well of course back in those days, first thing when we got a "new to us" car is we would shove all the seat belt buckles down into the seats. They were simple lap belts and the big buckle thing would "get in the way' lol. Then they started with the belt alarm and the plastic stand up around the belt so you couldnt hide it anymore lol.

I remember our first car didn't come with seat belts and I was fascinated when I watched the mechanic put them in. It had a hard metal dashboard and windshield that would shred you up a bit if you went through it, lol. Anyhow, we survived.

I didn't mind seat belts at all and still don't. Even the old fashioned kind were reasonably comfortable and a small price to pay for extra safety. With that said, I knew someone who really hated them and insisted that if they had one on in an accident they had, they would be dead. (The roof the car flattened down so hard that the seat was crushed and they survived by being on the floor.)

I think life does have a risk verses reward aspect. If you are too cautious it can almost be more dangerous in certain situations. I often wonder how risk taking people would be if they could live in a twenty something body without physically aging. Maybe a lot of folks would take up skydiving after awhile. Or maybe they would all stay in their houses and not risk walking around in risky outdoor environments, lol.

Oh yeah I should make it clear I am very thankful for the advances in tech like airbags and crumple zones. Cars are much safer now. However you are right there can always be that one case where they were better of without the belt etc.

I think it is like you say if one is preoccupied with being overly cautious to the point where they are distracted in fact. Never a good situation.
