Vinicius, la cara y la cruz en Lisboa (SPA/ENG)

Vinicius Júnior sin lugar a dudas es una de las grandes estrellas del fútbol mundial en la actualidad, sin embargo, tampoco se puede negar que el jugador se ha convertido en un personaje "polémico" dentro de los campos de juego.

Desde sus tiempos como finalista para el Balón de Oro en 2024, se ha convertido en un personaje polémico dentro y fuera de campo, includo siendo más protagonista por sus discusiones que por su actuación deportiva.

Pero al margan de lo controvertido que ha podido ser 'Vini Jr´, lo puntual de este artículo es el terrible y nefasto episodio que transcurrió en el partido de ida de los Playoffs de la Champions League entre el Benfica y el Real Madrid en el Estadio Da Luz de Lisboa.

Tras el excepcional gol del jugador brasileño para darle la victoria (a la postre) al Real Madrid, la celebración por la anotación generó un polémico ambiente en el recinto luso. Ver a Vinicius bailar alrededor de un banderín de córner con la imagen del Benfica, se convirtió en un irrespeto y por ende una provocación a la afición local.

Y más allá de que los estadios y las aficiones pueden volverse hostiles para los jugadores rivales, lo sucedido con Prestianni insultando a un colega de profesión e incluso siendo xenófobo al llamarle 'mono', es un hecho nefasto (a título personal) que manchó por completo el desarrollo del partido.

Y sí, lo reitero, Vinicius es la cara y cruz recurrente del Real Madrud, que puede ser la estrella con su juego y convertirse en antagonista por sus contantes polémicas. Pero lo que sucedió entre el brasileño y la afición del Benfica, simplemente NO justifica que haya sucedido un hecho racista, bajo ninguna circunstancia. Esperemos que sea un episodio que no vuelva a repetirse.

Vinicius, the two sides of the coin in Lisbon

Vinicius Júnior is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars in world football today; however, it cannot be denied that the player has become a "controversial" figure on the pitch.

Since his time as a Ballon d'Or finalist in 2024, he has become a polarizing character both on and off the field, often making headlines more for his arguments than for his sporting performance.

But regardless of how controversial 'Vini Jr' may be, the focus of this article is the terrible and disgraceful episode that took place during the first leg of the Champions League Playoffs between Benfica and Real Madrid at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.

Following the Brazilian's exceptional goal to give Real Madrid the (eventual) victory, his celebration sparked a tense atmosphere in the Portuguese stadium. Seeing Vinicius dance around a corner flag bearing Benfica’s imagery was perceived as disrespectful and, therefore, a provocation to the local fans.

While stadiums and fans can certainly become hostile toward rival players, what happened with Prestianni—insulting a fellow professional and even turning to xenophobia by calling him a 'monkey'—is a shameful act (in my personal opinion) that completely tarnished the match.

And yes, I reiterate: Vinicius is the recurring "heads and tails" (the two sides of the coin) for Real Madrid; he can be the star through his play and the antagonist through his constant controversies. But what happened between the Brazilian and the Benfica fans simply does NOT justify a racist incident under any circumstances. Let’s hope this is an episode that is never repeated.
