Tried N Tested: Chinese Cane. Alternative to fresh coconut water (for wellness)

The LORD truly provides!

And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever (through the endless eternities of the eternities). Amen (so be it).
Philippians 4:19-20

Never underestimate the goodness of God Almighty. HE knows exactly what we need and when we need it. Just when suddenly the coconut water stall that we usually patronize was suddenly torn down due to laps of license and there was a lack in fresh coconut supply without a hefty price, there it was, a day earlier a farmer decided to donate some of his Chinese Cane to the Food Bank and we were blessed with these purple strong canes come to the rescue!

Pardon me??

Yes. For those who constantly having “heatiness” in the body that can easily lead to sore throat, fever, dry coughs and even flu (practically the body can break down and fall sick if this continues), other than FRESH coconut water, boiled natural Chinese Cane is another good solution to keep the body cooled.

And no, you can’t just chew the cane off like a normal sugar cane. It is just too hard!

And no, you cannot use the juicer / sugar cane machine to juice it out. The machine can break! (true story!)

What you can do is

1. Chop away the outer skin

The outer skin naturally has this natural waxy coating on its body, and that is not suitable to be boiled together. Having a heavy chopping knife will be handy, also with a strong table that will hold up from chopping and a good chopping board.

Tip: Chopping into smaller chunks cam reduce boiling time.

2. Crush the body of the cane with pestle a little before boiling

Yes, this is needed in order for the juice of the cane to sip out easier during boiling over a period of time. Yes, you need a good number of hours in the pot; medium to low heat after the water reaches its initial boil.

3. Add LONGAN for additional sweetness

Because the Chinese Cane relatively isn’t as sweet as sugar cane (which explains why it has medicinal benefits compared to sugar cane), some people are not used to its bamboo-earthy sweetness and preferred to have a little more “fruity” flavor. Most of the Chinese herb drinks love to use Longan or Monk fruit (they are different types of fruits) as natural sweetener.

At first I thought boiling 2 hours was good enough; but my mom told me that if I didn’t use the pressure cooker, I will need at least 4 hours – 5 hours medium boil for its juice to sip out. Add water along the way when the water level reduces, and if you start this process in the early morning (before breakfast), by 3pm tea time you’ll have a nice cooled Chinese cane juice ready to normalize your body temperature on a really hot Summer’s day.

And oh, don't bother to try to chew it when it is slightly soften by all the boiling to get some sweetness out. The juice is already all saturated into the boiled water. 😅

Caution: This is not suitable to be taken during winter / chilly days, because the Chinese people think it will “bring (negative) wind” into the body where it is too chilled and the weak bodies will get cramps.

How about you?

If you ever come across this purple cane, will you give it a try?

So good to see that you are making full good use of the Chinese cane! Not many people know how to cook them anymore.

Did your mom teach you how to do that?
