A pre-selection of 33 players for the Fourth Caribbean Cup was announced this afternoon at the usual press conference offered by the baseball authorities in the Adolfo Luque hall, of the Latin American Stadium.

Armando Johnson will lead the Cuban team in the contest, based in the Bahamas from December 4 to 12.

“The delegation will be made up of 24 players (10 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders), mainly young people. The cup grants two tickets for the Central American and Caribbean Games, but taking into account that Cuba is classified by its place in the ranking, we are taking a team to develop figures to represent us in upcoming international events,” said Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation and national commissioner.

“It's not the pre-selection for the World Classic, but it will give us a measure of where things are going. With a view to the Classic, we have already valued the participation of athletes, their performances, study of opponents and management body,” he said.

Regarding the three Cuban players hired on professional circuits that were announced today by the Federation to intervene in that important tournament, Pérez Pardo stated that there is a will to expand the list of players who can be part of Team Cuba.

“We have worked with the players here and with the Cubans who play abroad. We have made contacts with them and respected their criteria. There are some who still do not want their presence in the Classic to be disclosed. In the coming days we will be in a better position to give details about it."

The Fourth Caribbean Cup, organized by the Caribbean Baseball Confederation, will also be attended by Puerto Rico, Haiti, Virgin Islands and the Bahamian hosts.

In the third edition, dedicated to Higinio Vélez, Cuba lost in the final to Curacao, four races to three.
