My Actifit & Clean Planet Journal: Sep 18 2023

Heya Hiva,

Ready or not.. here I come!

Today it started off pretty cold in the South Peninsula, Cape Town. More precisely, the weather was overcast and drizzling. I knew that to achieve my @actifit & @cleanplanet targets, I'd have to either get wet.. or time it perfectly. I chose the latter, and ventured out late afternoon - when my Egyptian Geese friends were enjoying the late sunshine.

My plan is to continue fighting the litter problem around my favourite little pond, and once that is done.. keep it in check. There's plenty more places I can explore, but this ecosystem is fragile and I don't want the trash blowing into the water itself. On the way there, I happened to see this piece of something - which I would soon find out was painted wood.

This, however, was just a piece of tissue paper. Not worth leaving on the ground of course, so I bagged it.

Look at this view. This is what I'm trying to keep pristine. So far, it's looking way better than before! It's amazing the difference one person can make. I feel like a warrior.

Now this one stumped me for a second. It kinda looked like a flat stone at first. Anyway, it was actually a piece of broken tile. My thinking was then, that such should obviously not be here.. so I picked it up.

This photo highlights how I scan each area. You would need to look very closely, to try and spot what is there.

After cutting up from the path, that which was once difficult to see.. now clearly visible. This plastic lid had to go! A sense of accomplishment, as the sand (then wedged between my toes) could attest!

My friends are now rather accustomed to seeing me here, more often. As always, their 'quacks' bring a broad smile to my face. The little ones usually approach me first and then the mom appears - to keep them close I guess. So cute!

You can see how they were foraging in the dirt. This is the same area which I have been cleaning for few days. That's a perfect reminder of how important this fight is.

Two streetwise pigeons, enjoying the final rays. Pigeons are so cool.. I think they're awesome! Such clever birds.

Another piece of plastic, half buried - time for it to go.

This was a good find. A plastic egg carton. I never recognized it at first, as it was half buried (the other way round).

This clearly was there for a while. As I pulled it from the sand, it was as if it grew longer. That was obviously an illusion; for I was simply exposing, that which was buried below the surface.

This may have been small, but it spoiled that beautiful greenery.

Yay - a Guinea fowl! They make the best morning alarm clocks haha. One of my favourite birds for sure!

Broken glass always freaks me out.. it's so dangerous. I mean, you've just seen the precious bird life around here. People also walk their dogs in these parts. Some may even jog along the path. Not cool.

If I spot trash, I want it to go. Time for this to go right now!

Same for this one. I'm wondering how much blows into the water. It's a worrying thought running through my head.

This rubbish was evidently caught right in the middle of these reeds.

I figured that I was done for the day, but found this piece on the way back. This job is never done!

Taking in that beautiful view again. It was definitely a great day to be an 'eco-citizen'. What a difference this is all making.

Yup - it's never done.. I should have known. Good spotting this plastic bottle anyway.

As I didn't see any bins by the pond, I had to bring the trash to the big outside one where I stay. After photographing the impressive haul, I added it into one of the bigger bags in the bin (it makes sense to re-use the blue plastic bag - wherever possible). This was a brilliant way to contribute to my daily steps.

Seeking peace,

ma3str0

That is so nice of you to clean the area. But how could a broken tile wander that way?
keep on doing the good work. : )

Thanks my friend. It's wild some of the things that one can find. Today is rubbish collection day again (Tuesdays).. anyway, there are people who rummage through the bins in the neighbourhood. On these specific days, it's not uncommon to find all kinds of trash in the road. Some of those individuals who open the rubbish bags live in the local mountains (where this pond is located at the base of). Appreciate your kind support.

I cannot believe that so many plastics people throw there in such a nice location. It's really kind of you to step out and take the initiative to clean the planet...

Love it. You're the second person I've seen doing this. I just put some bags in the backpack. I'm already out there anyway and there's plenty of dirtbags here, too.
