My Actifit & Clean Planet Journal: Sep 19 2023

Heya Hiva,

Ready or not.. here I come!

So it was another cold overcast day here down south - with periodic frigid gusts of drizzle. I'm grateful that with each passing day, we're getting closer to summer. Alas, today that very concept seemed rather foreign. Though as an active 'eco-citizen', I can't simply let some wild weather prevent me from making a positive impact. I thus decided to dress warm instead, and brave the unknown. At some point in the future, I may need to invest in a cool raincoat.. for now, I shall make do without. I figured that I'd also try a different route today, via a local playground; then somehow meandering up to the wetland - where my Egyptian Geese friends like to hang out.

For some context.. Tuesdays are rubbish collection days down here, so it's not very unusual to find some litter flying around. Sadly, there's a few impoverished individuals who dig in the bins, often leaving in their wake, environmental devastation. Afterall, with bags torn open, rubbish is more prone to fly around. Yes, it's of course very sad that such poverty exists; but at the same time, it becomes a constant tug of war to keep the local environment tidy. I was able to collect this tissue before it blew further away.

Upon arriving at the little park, I found some fuzzy stuff. I'm pretty sure that I've seen something similar in birds nests where I stay. As this clearly wasn't in any nest (and obviously not meant to be there), I bagged it without haste.

This was an unexpected find. A 'covid protective' face mask. I was quick to discard of it. I just had a strange vibe, that somehow it could have some nasty germs on it. Rather safe than sorry I guess.

Ear buds are always gross. Maybe from someone's torn open rubbish?

A piece of broken tile. This was one of two I found today - the other being near this one in the road. Strangely I picked up something similar at the pond yesterday as well. That one was more grey though.. I can see white here.

Bye bye plastic lid - time to go on another trip.

Wonder what these are called?.. a 'merry go round' I would guess. Haven't been on one in years haha. Better not lol.. people may think I'm odd. I kinda am, come to think bout it; but yeah, not today - I'm on a mission.

An empty cigarette packet does not belong on a playground. Time to say goodbye.

Another plastic lid - this one torn. Wonder how that happened?

I found this to be a real shocker! A sharp rusty razor blade - where kids play. That's so dangerous! Really dangerous in fact! I was very careful how I picked it up.

I did a sort of a loop around the playground area. On a nearby road, I found this remnant of a tea light candle.

Not far away, a granola bar wrapper. Probs from someone's rubbish bag torn open.

I'm not sure what this would be called. I think it's that lining used for embroidery. Don't ask me how I know that - long story lol.

Near the bottom, I found this big chunk of rubber sole. Not sure where the rest is. Could someone's footwear have broken in the park? If so, then why just leave this piece here?

So many questions.. my thoughts were bouncing around like a 'seesaw'. Those who litter, contribute to the downward 'slide' of society. My minds a 'playground'.

I think I have an idea of what this may be, from familiarity of the unbroken product. I think it could be from one of those medical facemasks perhaps?

Finishing with the park for now, I made my way up to the local pond. This plastic disposable lid on the road, joined the rest of the garbage I was now carrying with me.

Another tissue/napkin to go. The wind was howling, so I had to hold onto the bag firmly. I was also getting a bit damp from some sporadic drizzle.

I couldn't resist saying 'hi' to my friends. Look at them today. Looks to me like two adults tucking in their necks, and the little one's cuddling together on the sand. Can they get any cuter! I mean really! They continue to make me smile - everytime!

Good thing I came to see them.. was able to grab an avo bag, which somehow made its way up here.

Shortly after departing, I found a large empty bleach bottle.

Then check this out. I found it below someone's trailer just off the road. It was the right thing to do - to quickly grab it, before it could blow away. The weird thing is that it's the same type of packet I found by the pond yesterday. I'm wondering if it could be the same one?! I tried to compare photos and it seems that there's a tear leading into the 'O' from both.. that's pretty wild if it's the same. It can be so hard to see hard work undone. Life's like that though, and I won't let any such set backs stop me. I bagged it today with the rest - that's what's important now.

On a happy note, I found a bin by the park earlier. I ended up making another quick detour at the end of all this to test it out. After the photo, I tied the bag securely - so nothing could blow out of it. It also had some weight to it, so I thought it could help keep the other loose items already there down. As it was also rubbish collection day, I figured that this bin would likely get emptied soon enough. Afterwards, I ponder on the fact that I couldn't re-use that specific blue carrier. Let's see this as an overall test of the system then. I still kinda prefer using the wheelie bin near where I stay, so I think I'll go back to that tomorrow. Wow, what a day; I'm really tired, but met my steps in the process.

Seeking peace,

ma3str0

Well done on picking other people's trash - I should commit to doing the same when I go somewhere nice (like surfing at the beach or hiking!). Luckily my last surf was in a pristine place but usually that's not the case!

Thanks my friend. Yeah, the beach is a dope idea!.. I'm hoping to eventually expand my reach to the coastline too. So far, the local wetlands are keeping me pretty busy though. I can already see a positive change.
