My Actifit & Clean Planet Journal: Sep 21 2023

Heya Hiva,

Ready or not.. here I come!

It didn't take too long to realize that this would be a challenging day to meet both my Actifit and Clean Planet goals. Afterall, it's on a rainy day when a snail comes out to play! Watching both the clock and the skies, I sought the most opportune moment to take on the mission.

The walk to the local wetlands usually yields results. With my eyes scanning the road, it wasn't long before I found something of interest. This large piece of plastic wrapping needed to be tackled speedily. Being so light, it wouldn't take much wind to lift it towards the environmentally fragile ecosystem.

The rest of the walk seemed pretty clean until I came across this oversized empty can of energy drink. u

Though it was evidently pretty wild being out today (weather-wise).. no amount of frigid water in my face, could dampen this sensational view before me.

No visit here feels complete without saying 'hi' to my special friends. Look how cute they are huddled together in the cold - too adorable. Check how awesome their little faces are. Cleaning their surroundings has proven to be a very rewarding experience, speaking now from the point of view of my soul.

I brought them a special treat today.. a selection of nourishing seeds/grains. The mom made the sweetest sounds while the goslings enjoyed the meal.

Look how she allowed the little ones to eat first, whilst keeping an eye on everything. How amazing is that! There is so much to learn from nature.

As fun as that was, I was on a mission to clean this part of the planet. It wasn't long before I found a piece of broken tile. Over the period of time which I've been doing this, I've discovered a few fragments.

Scanning the environment with the utmost precision, it quickly became apparent that today's walk needed to advance further. That's a positive indication of the difference this is all making.

It's important to showcase some of the biodiversity here. I think that's a Cape robin-chat perched atop those picturesque branches.

Look how wet this tissue is.. the obvious advantage being that the extra mass meant it was less likely to fly around. In the bag it went.

This was one of my more intriguing finds of the day. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm wondering if it was a spark plug?

A yellow and white banana themed sock.. certainly added some variety to the mix!

Nothing is too small - that's how we clean the planet!

Thought we could play a game here. Can you spot what's not meant to be in this picture?

It wasn't the easiest pick up, but certainly worth the extra strides. Speaking of strides, it was a shoe hiding there!

Nearby the piece of discarded footwear, was this interesting looking plant. Couldn't resist taking a pic.. whilst standing there with my wet sand covered feet.

When I spotted this litter, I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at. Truth be told, I was extra cautious as I approached it.

Upon closer inspection, I wondered if the contraption may have been some sort of disposable nicotine delivery system? I'm not sure. Whatever its purpose, it wasn't ok to be polluting the ecosystem like this.

It was damp and dirty - need I say more?

When I first discovered this fast food cardboard tub, I thought this would be a reasonably quick recovery.. I was wrong.

When I pulled it out.. I learned that it had been here for so long, it had become intertwined with nature. I had to gently tap off loads of ants, and try to save a few caterpillars which chose to spin their cocoons in this micro habitat.

I feel it was a great day. The bag of rubbish felt pretty heavy upon my departure. Soaking in the scenery one last time for the day, I decided to keep on with the good fight.

With no bins in my sight at the wetlands, I took the rubbish to the nearby municipal wheelie bin where I stay. As I've done before, I photographed the haul - then combined it with rubbish in another bag. It takes longer to do this, but it's better for the environment (as I can re-use my collection bag that way). Oh yes, I may have been saturated earlier.. but at the end of the day, I met my steps.

Seeking peace,

ma3str0

Special thanks to @actifit and my 'eco-citizen' friends over at @cleanplanet , @cleanyourcity & @solarisfuture - stoked to be part of the solution, whilst getting fit in the process.

Hi my awesome friend. So cool to see that you're around! Hope everything is going well for you. Thanks so much as always for the kind words. Having an awesome time with this.

I've gotta be careful, though. The area which I'm predominantly focussing on is really a dangerous place (understatement). You never know who is hiding in the bush. So, while I enjoy the beauty of the nature, and am excited to both get fit & clean the planet.. I'm on edge around there. I don't plan to stop anytime soon, but yeah.. it's sad that it's like that.

I like to think that as I clean up there (together with my regular presence).. perhaps it may even add to the overall safety of those parts in some tiny way. It's one friendly face out there, anyway. I try to be vigilant, looking over both shoulders regularly.

I know full well the feeling of being on edge in SA, especially when in remote areas. Please be safe always and take care of yourself. Do you ever go walking with a companion as an extra deterrent, or do you feel the need to arm yourself so to speak? I love SA, I honestly do, but the last time I visited in 2019 I felt so uneasy there. It's really sad, I agree :-( Ilook forward to following you on more of your adventures. !LUV !ALIVE !PIMP

I had a pepper spray with me with me haha.. nah, I go on my own, and there was a horrific incident there a while back. Not a great place to let one's guard down. I do try to be as careful as possible and try to keep the road in sight - where possible. Thanks my awesome buddy. Please take care.
