My Actifit & Clean Planet Journal: Sep 25 2023

Heya Hiva シ

Ready or not, here I come..

-> from being motivated by the Guinea fowls!

With much of the Western Cape region experiencing severe flooding since my last Actifit & Clean Planet adventure.. I knew that my only chance for the next one, would be once the worst of this particularly brutal low pressure system had safely passed. Repeatedly checking the weather forecast (as well as the clock), I eventually braved the prevailing conditions just before evening - when the storm intensity had significantly abated. With time evidently not on my side, there was little choice but to embrace the frigid slip stream - with the Guinea fowl racing ahead serving as the perfect motivation for my triumphant 'cross country' finish.

When I took the first steps, I immediately questioned deciding to do this today. At least my blueish beanie was keeping my ears warm! Speaking of 'blueish'.. what's that I spot on the sidewalk?

As I approached what grabbed my attention, I saw something else. An empty bottle of liquor. A great find indeed! Maybe someone got drunk on the side of the road? Hectic!

Oh, the thing I came for.. it was an empty 'moth balls' packet it seems. Hope there was nothing inside when it made its way here!

With the grass so wet, I contemplated looking for trash along the roadside. Then I remembered the geese, who I've been worried about - so I decided to check up on them.

How cute is that face! Glad they seem to be ok, though it must have been very rough for them.

I don't see any obvious shelter around the area I assume to be their favourite spot. Wonder how they rode out the worst of the storm? On their bellies I guess?

You can see how much rainfall there was overnight - wow!

This is wild, the water level is significantly higher than before. I don't see any litter along the banks, so that's a good thing. That being said, I'm not sure what may have sunk to the bottom.. nor what could have reached the reeds on the other side.

Everything is so water logged.. so there could actually be rubbish below it. I'll need the water level to drop to check that out.

Well.. think about it. Just the other day, I was standing in front of this same bench and found an empty soft drink can there. Now I can't even reach that spot!

But I can still get to this piece of water filled plastic. That's another notable achievement for the day - yay!

Thought those following my posts may find this bit interesting.. if you look carefully in the distance, you'll see smoke rising. There's someone out there in that thick bush. I'm clearly not alone!

Look where I got to today! I've walked quite far. This is another entry point to the same wetlands (a main entrance of sorts). The boards speak of very special toads which needs our help.. the Western Leopard Toads. They're remarkable creatures, though I haven't seen one in a while.

A thick broken shard of hard plastic.

The sole of a shoe. It was there for a while, as the grass was growing over it.

A plastic lid to one of those disposable coffee cups.. perched in an awesome looking tree.

This plastic soft drink bottle needed to be bagged. There's far too much plastic in the world.

This 'tear off' foil cover was from a small yogurt I reckon.

I photographed this particular rock the other day when I wondered whether it may have been a 'large plastic something'. Today, while it was wet.. I pondered whether it may have been a turtle haha (which you do in fact get down here too).

So I got very wet today.. it really wasn't easy at all! But at the same time, I found it to be a rewarding experience. I disposed of the trash in the municipal wheelie bin where I stay (combining it with other rubbish, after taking the photo). The garbage truck is scheduled to come tomorrow (Tuesdays). Happy to report that following my effort to clean the planet, I was able to meet my steps as well.

Seeking peace,

ma3str0

I wonder if the person was cooking their breakfast or keeping warm, do you know if it is popular for people to often camp out there? Odd how lots of places will seem to have an odd forgotten shoe laying about. 👠

(Edited)

It was in the evening and freezing cold, so I suspect it was probably to keep warm. There are both homeless and dangerous criminals which move through those thick bushes. The danger level from the latter cannot be understated. There was a horrific murder of a cyclist a while back, and a body was apparently found a few weeks ago too (though I'm not sure of cause of death). When I was a child, I camped in these same mountains. That thought is now as distant as my youth itself! Each shoe has a story to tell I'm sure.

I had no idea all shoes go to Cape when they die.

Lol.. they seem to come as 'singles' too from what I can see. Maybe I'll find the other half of the pairs in due course?
