My Actifit & Clean Planet Adventure: Oct 9 2023

Heya Hiva シ

Ready or not, here I come..

-> from finding myself 'between a rock and a hard place'. Stay tuned to the end to find out why..

Adventure afoot!

It was another super windy day in the South Peninsula - resulting in a constant struggle, to hold on to each piece of trash collected prior. Whenever I'd open the carrier, existing contents would race around as if in a vortex!

Before..

After..

The previously described tumultuous situation commenced following the safe retrieval of this sheet of newspaper - on my way to the wetlands.

Before..

After..

Sometimes I'm surprised by what I pick up. Not in terms of what has been discarded, but rather the misinterpretation of an article in question. The colour and size of this one for example, resembled that of an empty packet of potato crisps. To my surprize however, it was actually the plastic remnants of a one litre fruit juice.

Before..

After..

Look at the thickness of this glass fragment retrieved! I think it was from the bottom of a bottle.

Before..

After..

This piece of plastic wrapper came from a softdrink bottle.

Before..

After..

I was fascinated by how this blue strip of plastic, was vertically planted in the sand - alongside grass with stands of similar diameter.

Before..

After..

This weathered newspaper advertisement wrecked an otherwise tidy patch of wild grass and reeds.

Before..

After..

The biggest item collected today, was that of large plastic bottle. I'm really not sure what it's original contents may have been. I'm guessing some sort of fuel perhaps? ..or maybe even a fruit juice concentrate? I've recall seeing both those types of items in similar sorts of bottles.

Before..

After..

Next up was a brown paper bag from a fast food chain. No litter is good litter.. but rather paper than plastic.

Before..

After..

This piece of cardboard had a few snails attached. I carefully removed them before bagging it.

Before..

After..

A really old worn sock. It was time for it to take a walk to the bin.

Our colourful problem..

Solution in black & white!

All the trash picked up was placed in the nearby municipal bin. Great news is that it had been emptied of rubbish from yesterday! Feeling so stoked to be getting fit, whilst improving this very special piece of earth.

Final thoughts..

Allow me to elaborate with regards to the intro. With the vast area which I have been focusing on getting cleaner by the day, I have been carefully pondering in the back of my mind.. "where to next"? One idea is to proceed further to the right, which is certainly more dangerous (due to its remoteness). I'm convinced there must be loads of trash to collect; but at the same time, there is a very real element of criminal danger. I found myself staring at the difficult region today. Ironically the hard place is past these large rocks.

Till next time,

ma3str0

What is criminal about it? Is it trespassing or something?

Hey mate @enginewitty ..Sun Valley Wetlands is around the Peers Cave area (Fish Hoek, Cape Town). Historically, the greater region has been extremely dangerous in terms of violent crime.

It was reported a few years ago, that a cyclist (Fish Hoek resident) was murdered in the area. Very recently it was reported (around September this year).. that the remains of an adult was found nearby (between Ou Kaapse Weg and Peers Cave in Fish Hoek). Not sure the outcome of that particular investigation, but that's pretty scary irrespective.

The thing is.. muggers can theoretically hide in the bushes where I collect the litter and violently rob a person. South Africa is a very dangerous place. This particular area can get be quite intense - especially when someone just appears out the bush (happens often enough). Not everyone is a criminal obviously, but you need to be very vigilant.

On a sidenote with regards to 'Peers Cave' in general (same general area where I mainly clean right now).. it was apparently probably occupied on and off for the last 200 000 years! In the 1927 (if I remember correctly), remains of a stone age man was discovered - dated as being around 12000 years old. There was Khoisan rock art, stone tooks and an ancient burial site. Unfortunately, I haven't been up there in years due to the criminal element (though you can sometimes see the cave on some of my photos during my cleanups).
