My Actifit & Clean Planet Adventure: Oct 10 2023

Heya Hiva シ

Ready or not, here I come..

-> from being a responsible citizen and taking decisive action. Stay tuned to till the end, to find out what happened!

Adventure afoot!

Although it's no secret that I choose to err on the side of caution with regards to my clean up activities.. this does not mean that potential danger, in turn opts to keep its distance from me. With each passing step through the wetlands, hidden risks may be a lot closer than anticipated.

Before..

After..

So, in an attempt to make a real impact.. I strive to break new ground on each and every adventure. Today was therefore no different. The first piece of litter collected resembled some sort of heavy weathered cardboard/plaster. I don't really know what it was to be honest, but it did remind me of a piece of 'cornice' (horizonatal decorative moulding). Perhaps it was? Not sure.

Before..

After..

This plastic bottle was huge. I'm guessing a 5 litre? Anyway, it filled most of the carrier, so each item collected thereafter was an interesting challenge to bag.

Before..

After..

This weathered piece of paper, completely wrecked the scenic beauty around where is was found. Thankfully, that was soon rectified.

Before..

After..

This was like a two for one situation! Some unsightly plastic waste, comprising an empty sachet and a 2 litre cold drink bottle.

Before..

After..

This was a tricky recovery - simple in principal, but naturally hazardous in practice. It's always a challenge to reach through so many little branches.

Before..

After..

Being nearby to a school, I was stoked to get rid of this very large empty beer bottle! It has no place here! On a happier note, it was still in one piece.

Before..

After..

It was material. It was old. Beyond that, I'm clueless!

Before..

After..

A empty potato chips packet collected. One small change and the spot looked amazing again!

Before..

After..

More weathered material to rid the area of. I can't identify what it originated from. Perhaps it was a scarf? ..or maybe just a rag to begin with?

Before..

After..

This sizeable piece of plastic was one of the larger items recovered today. Scanning the area, I felt quite chuffed with all the progress made thus far.

Our colourful problem..

Solution in black & white!

I emptied all but one item of the trash, into a nearby municipal bin for collection. From thereon, my focus shifted. Read on to understand why.

Final thoughts..

If you're wondering about the item in this photograph.. I can confirm that it did indeed make its way to the municipal bin with the other items. I chose this photo for the end of the post however, due to its similarity with one item which did not. Cutlery like this broken plastic fork may seem innocuous, but what of the other type - especially if it be durable and sharp.

Ok.. so around the end of the adventure, I found a scary looking steak knife lying in some grass. Due to the potential criminal element around these parts, leaving it did not seem like the responsible thing to do. Neither did picking it up (in case it was linked to a crime). Due to the quiet and potentially hostile surroundings I found myself in, though.. I opted to carefully pick it up with a glove, and take the item home. I really didn't feel comfortable with the idea, but leaving it behind (or even in a publicly accessible bin) seemed too irresponsible to me.

Once I got back, I immediately phoned the local police and explained the whole situation. I was advised that as no violent crime was reported in the area within the last day, I could safely dispose of the steak knife with the municipal refuse. I wrote down the officers name, and have the call log to refer back to, if need be. I think that was the responsible thing to do.

Till next time,

ma3str0

Special thanks to @actifit and my 'eco-citizen' friends over at @cleanplanet , @cleanyourcity & @solarisfuture - stoked to be part of the solution, whilst getting fit in the process.

My gratitude as well to each and every awesome individual, kindly supporting me on this incredible adventure - seeing solutions to the challenges of our colourful world in black & white.

I'm rapidly approaching 50 and still say that was dope.

Really dig your color photo enhancements.

I had no idea South Africans can call the cops like that. DOPE. Dial 9-1-1 where I'm from and you just catapulted yourself to the center of an investigation.

That's dope.. I'm not too far round that corner myself - about to hit the big 40 haha.. so guess I'll be the same! Thanks for the kind words.. yeah, my cool mate @dandays has given me some awesome advice! Yeah, we can still phone the police down here.. so that's cool. I'd imagine it must suck to be innocent and be catapulted into any investigation. Keep well my friend and thanks a ton for the ongoing legendary support.
