My Actifit & Clean Planet Adventure: Oct 11 2023

Heya Hiva シ

Ready or not, here I come..

-> from deciding to bravely 'push the boundaries'. Stay tuned to the end, to hear how it all went!

Adventure afoot!

For me, this has felt like a really long winter! Sure, it's officially been spring for some time now.. but Cape Town's bitter cold & wet patch seemed to just drag on. Maybe it's all my own perception, being a warm sunshine kind of dude. Irrespective, today's weather provided a welcome sense of relief - knowing that the next few months are gonna be dope! It's no surprize then.. that earlier on, I was really stoked to venture out on my 'Clean Planet' walk.

Before..

After..

The first piece trash worth mentioning was this handwritten grocery list. Curiosity got the better of me, with an interesting observation made as result. The person who wrote the list wanted food for birds (hopefully feeding the wild kind).

If the person who wrote it was considerate, then it seems unlikely that the litter was intentional. There's a lesson here.. we should all be extra careful so as to not accidentally contribute to an already unmanageable problem.

Before..

After..

From there on, I collected three empty snack packets. They were each of a similar size, and located not too far from one another. This is one of those which was retrieved.

Before..

After..

A strip of 'overlocked' material (likely from an old item of clothing). Glad to have removed it, as I would hate to think of something so hazardous being used by a bird - in the construction of its nest.

Before..

After..

Next up was an empty plastic bottle of tanning lotion (missing the lid). I was quite shocked at all the new litter which had appeared since yesterday. Not cool!

Before..

After..

This crumpled paper was trickier to remove than the photo may allude to. I had to leave the path and traverse down a small embankment. The high grass and sandy soil made for an interesting retrieval (not to mention making it harder for a quick exit should such be warranted!).

Before..

After..

A weathered but colourful piece of newspaper. This sort of colour, however, did not belong with the brilliance of the nearby natural flora.

Before..

After..

This large plastic refuse bag was one of my harder cleanups due to it's unfamiliar location. I had to be extremely tactical during the recovery - quickly retreating up a steep embankment.

Before..

After..

This next item was even harder to take out. Once spotted, I then planned how the job was going to get done - whilst obviously keeping my wits about me. Happy to report that it ended with success!

Before..

After..

These fragments of some sort of a pole urgently needed to go. The handle makes me think that perhaps it was once a part of an umbrella?

Before..

After..

After the previous difficult recoveries, I was rather pleased to have a more accessible one.

Our colourful problem..

Solution in black & white!

The rubbish for the day was emptied into the nearby municipal bin. Hopefully there'll be a collection soon, as the bin is looking quite full. Another successful walk - mission accomplished!

Final thoughts..

The more difficult recoveries were performed in a part of the bush, where I've (up to now) been avoiding. It's notoriously more remote. Pushing the boundaries is really scary.. though at the same time, I'm very grateful for the difference I've made; and being able to continue telling the tale!

Till next time,

ma3str0

Special thanks to @actifit and my 'eco-citizen' friends over at @cleanplanet , @cleanyourcity & @solarisfuture - stoked to be part of the solution, whilst getting fit in the process.

My gratitude as well to each and every awesome individual, kindly supporting me on this incredible adventure - seeing solutions to the challenges of our colourful world in black & white.

Hi my friend. I knew it was bad.. but this whole adventure has been beyond eye opening. The safety aspect in the more remote parts is challenging - especially when on ones own. That being said.. trash is literally everywhere! ..and you're right - it's not that hard to pick up a piece here and there (the problem itself is ongoing, though). Hand sanitizer and gloves are also useful :)
