About the Quote

We all face obstacles, whatever it is we do. There are many face these obstacles. We face them head-on, we side-step them, we shift our views of them, we delay, we retreat to return later, we run away for good.

Another way to deal with obstacles which we sometimes foret is to take the bridge over the obstacle. There could be things present which make it much easier to deal with the obstacle. There could even be a literal bridge over a physicl obstacle. We all have to face obstacles, but it's OK to find ways to make that easier.

Some (More) Information about Mary Lou Retton

About 6 weeks before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games Mary Lou Retton needed arthroscopic surgery to repair a major knee injury. This surgery was minimally invasive, so she was able to resume walking and training within a week. The physical therapy she underwent helped to ensure a quick recovery in time for her turn at the Olympics.

Mary Lou Retton was locked with Ecaterina Szabo from Romania for the all-around title and the Gold Medal which came with it. It came down to her final event, the vault. A vault scoring more than 9.950 gives her sole posession of the Gold Medal. A vault of exactly 9.950 giver her a share of the Gold Medal with Ecaterina Szabo. Any score less than that results in not winning the Gold Medal.

Retton scored a 10.000 on her first vault, and that would secure the Gold Medal for her. Since Olympics rules for the event required a 2nd vault, Retton made her second vault. As if to validate the 10.000 she scored on her first vault, she scored 10.000 on her 2nd vault.

When the women's gymnastics competition ended, Retton flew back to Fairmont, West Virgina to spend time with family after many months away for training. The people of her home town gave her a parade to go along with the rock star treatment she received the moment she reached the local airport. She would participate in many parades that year, including the ticker tape parade in New York up the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway in lower Manhattan. When asked what she thought of this parade, Mary Lou Retton said that as great was it was, it doesn't caompare with the parade she receied in Fairmont, West Virginia.
