It takes effort to accomplish anything of value in life. That effort comes with, and also produces, its own heat. That heat is what helps to mold and shape us. Along the way we're put into a crucible to burn off any excess materials or contaminants. Cold is only applied at the end in order to finish the forging process.
For us to accomplish great things, we have to want to accomplish them. A lukewarm attitude won't get that done, so we can't have one. Indifference is a sure way to never accomplish great things. When everyone in a group is gifted with the same amount of talent and ability-- especially at the lite level-- the difference-maker will be desire. The flame that's in the heart keeps that desire alive. As long as that flame is alive, success remains nearby.

After the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games, Mary Lou Retton performed in numerous exhibitions. She retired from competition in 1986. That year she began her collegiate academic career ay the University of Texas.
It was there she met Shannon Kelly, quarterback of the football team. They dated while students there, and in 1990 they married each other. Between 1995 and 2002 they had four daughters. Sadly, they divorced in 2018, after 28 years of marriage.
In 1992 Mary Lou Retton was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. When her ancestors entered the United Stated at Ellis Island, they changed their family name to Retton from Rotundo.
In 1997 she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
She was the first woman inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame in 2020. She had been living in Houston, Texas, US since before the 1984 Summer Olympics when she moved from Fairmont, West Virginia, US to train with Béla Károlyi.
