How The Premier League Became Successful

Out of the top 5 leagues in Europe, the English premier league is the best, or at least that's what people think. Why it is the best? People will say because of the unpredictability, the fight for places right up to the last matchday, no one or two clubs winning it every year while rest of the league being fillers. Okay now look at serie A, last matchday is ahead of us, still you don't know whether Milan or Inter will win, over in La Liga there are 6 teams fighting relegation as of two weeks ago, I know there have been changes, I just haven't looked up. Same thing happens in the Bundesliga, ligue 1 too. So why people always pick the premier league? It's because you only talk about stuff you see. Premier league is the most telecasted league in the world, of course more people are watching it and more people are preferring it. Compared to this, other leagues aren't shown enough across the world. So it's only normal that the fan following will be lesser than the premier league. Now, let's break down the whole premier league algorithm.

What we see today is a completely different premier league than what it was some 150 years ago. Back in the late 1800s, when the first football league was formed, there were no foreigners allowed. Here we'll be counting great Britain as the native country. All the way until the mid 1900s. During this time English football was in the English island and it's following too because, well, there are only English players. To understand the fact you can think about American football, less players from the outside, less attraction from the outside. So after the mid 1900s, when the EU was formed, the FA was forced to give permission to foreign players to come and play in England. Because by then football was a paid work. It was listed as a job and means of business, like any other. Due to this permission the first foreign players fleet started flocking in England. And some clubs did the advantage of it. They bought the best from around the world. But the number wasn't big enough. Until, 1992. This is when the modern day premier league was founded. The UK government bankrolled this new league. invested heavily in tv deals, securing coverage around the world. And the limit on signing foreign players was lifted. But kept somewhat o track by the homegrown quota. This rule has many loopholes too. So the huge tv deals and commercial ad deals meant more revenue for the clubs. Note that these revenue are distributed among the clubs of the league more equally than any other leagues in Europe. So everyone gets a chance to get rich. Upon lifting the restrictions and having a lot of revenue money, foreign players numbers increased highly. On top of it the FA allowed clubs to be acquired by foreign businesses or individuals. This globalized the league even more. With more money and more revenue and more everything.

These are mainly an attempt by the UK government to make football of England the best in the world, or at least the most followed one. And we gotta say they are successful. Whether it's good or bad? That's another story, another time.

You are right but slightly. For example, Newcastle's last match was more like a big UCL night. The fans were amazing. Pretty sure their hands were sore as the way they waved flags. We all know about the rise of Newcastle, but in Spain, it's not simple as Socios run Clubs. To buy a club in other's league, the deal has to be crazy as Twitter's takeover. Meaning it's so hard to buy shares from thousands of people. Before spending big, they have to earn as one alone can't do much.

You are absolutely right about the broadcasting of EPL, but It's all about star players since the Media also have to cash in. They are doing business. Do I have to say more?

Signing of Messi has changed things for Ligue 1.

Well, thanks for proving my point. You are correct in saying the Newcastle game being similar to a UCL night. Of course it was. But the fact is, there are equal or nearly equal level craze in the other leagues too. You should watch the game from this season where Stuttgart secured their safety from relegation and you'll know what I'm saying.

And the buying clubs being difficult in Spain? That's literally what my writing is about. The UK government has made it easy for foreign investors to buy clubs in the prem. It's their bankrolling and ease of rules that has made the premiership as enjoyable as it is today.
