Who Should You Prioritize? The Manager Or The Players

They all say, people have their priorities. And priorities are important. Very important. Same goes for running a football club. Priorities set straight can make or break your football club. Usually being an owner or the directorial figure of the cluh you would have to choose, between the coach or the players. Who would you prioritize? Would you prioritize the coach and buy and sell players accordingly? Or will you back the players? And always blame the manager if things aren't going to plan with your all star team? Let's see which is better.

Taking Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for example. When he first came to power he spent lavishly. Assembled the famous Galactico squad. But we all know what happened next. Two champions league titles and league titles apiece. Sounds good. but when he sacked Del Bosque, things went downhill. And that team fell apart. Years later, Perez changed his strategy. This time he backed the manager. We can see Zinedine Zidane's stint as an example. Zidane completely froze out Bale and James Rodriguez. Perez did not intervene. Bale didn't get a chance under Carlo too. We all know how much he costed. Add hazard to the mix. Still perez not intervening. The result? Two league titles if everything goes as planned. Perez realized stuff in these 10+ years. Some Galactico's might not shine, but trusting the coach will shine the trophy cabinet.

AC Milan has been a vintage example. They've always trusted Sacchi, Carlo and Capello. The players had to adopt accordingly. If they could, they'd stay, otherwise they'd be sold. No manager was dismissed because he couldn't work with a certain set of players. And yes that's how AC Milan came to be. The famous Rossonerri. Manchester City is also a modern day example. When they were first bought by the UAE sheikh, they were stuffed with star players. They prioritized them over anything. And in so many years they only managed two leagues. And when they finally settle for Pep, and run the team roster accordingly, well, you know what happened in England in the last 5 years.

By now maybe you all have understood why PSG isn't winning the game even with all that money. They still prioritize players over managers. A bit too much. Tuchel pulled this PSG to the final for the first time in god knows how many years. And Pochettino isn't a fraud either. They are good, both of them. But why they and PSG aren't successful is because the owner only cares about fielding the most hyped team in the world. The manager doesn't get players according to his needs. And thus there's a hole in everything. When they will also realize that their priorities lie in the wrong place, is the time they'll actually start progressing. As they say, history never lies.
