#freewrite :: 5 minute freewrite - Prompt: awry

avatar

In high school, I had a history teacher, who told us the chapters to study based on her analysis over a number of past years' papers. This was for a major exam that we were taking at the end of the year. Almost all of us in the class prepared for just those few chapters, slugging through them and memorizing every detail possible because we believed our teacher.

Then came exam day, all of us were confident that we were going to score in this paper. But alas! The questions that were asked were all not from the chapters that we memorized for but from the other chapters which we hardly touched.

Most of us came out of the exam hall, hopeless, worried, despaired and sweaty palmed. Things really went awry for us that day for that paper. But it was our mistake for taking a short cut in studying only those chapters. We should have thought beyond, what if? We should have studied all the chapters, full stop. I didn't score in that exam but thankfully, I did not fail either.

Ever since that day, I learnt that as much as we can plan for things, we must always be prepared for the worst or be prepared for what ifs. As much as we are confident that things will work out a certain way, we must always be flexible to change the plans or to adapt to any change that is required if things go awry. And of course, I learnt not to take short cuts when it comes to studies :P

That teacher taught you a very valuable lesson! I took a math final like that once. We were required to teach ourselves the next level of thought during the exam. I remember thinking I must have missed a lot of classes somehow, even though I went every single day, and was certain I had failed. But I got a high mark! The test wasn't about the content, ti was about the processes she had taught us. Best test I ever took, thank you for reminding me about it/
Here is Tuesday’s encouragement from @freewritehouse . PLEASE write us all another!

You are right @owasco. She taught us a very valuable lesson. Your math final sounds very interesting. I like math in the way that you just need to learn the basics and then you can apply it with any number that they give you. Though this is very different with history when everything needs to be memorized. Thank you @owasco for your comment!

I think a major exam always examines everything teached (even what is skipped).

Good you do not take the short cuts otherwise you wouldn't be able to take so many steps either.
