My Actifit Report Card: May 8 2023

avatar

Met this beauty on the trail today. It is the biggest garter snake I have seen.

My son in law told me that I should have picked it up and taking it home. They are great for the garden.

But for one, I am not a snake handling kind of person and for two, all Navajos I have met so far hate snakes and I fear it would not survive here. Even though there are plenty of nice fat prairie dogs running all over the place.

A view from above 🤓

That's really long. Isn't it harmful?

This particular snake is not. But a very similar looking snake - rattle snake - is and it is better to avoid them.

I hate snakes and I am shocked that how peoples are interested in keeping snakes in garden as they are not friendly like pet dogs ,cats etc.

I wouldn't even touch it, my first instinct would be to crush it.. lol..

But she is indeed beautiful 😍

And I wonder how good snakes are for gardens when we have been taught all our lives to kill them when they are in sight.

A lot of people want to kill any snake they see. If it is a poisonous snake close to where people live, it is best to get rid of it. But a harmless snake like the garter snake can be super useful. They eat mice, rats, gophers, and other small rodents that can cause a lot of damage in the garden and can bring diseases to humans.
snakes are an important part of the eco system.
That said, I also rather see them from a distance 🤪

Thank goodness I am not alone .

I like non venomous snakes but I do not like to get bit by them. I would have let it be.

Agreed. I don't like to get bit by anything lol. Still, in my garden in San Diego, I have tons of gophers. That snake would be very happy there!!

This snake is very long and one should stay away from such things as they never know when they will attack. You are absolutely right not to take it home because it will not be easy to handle.
