My Actifit Report Card: October 5 2025
Even though sugarcane has been cultivated for thousands of years, sugar was not widely available to the masses. Consuming sugarcane juice during the sugarcane season is not the same as consuming sugar all year round. Sugarcane juice is nutritionally very different from sugar. Sugarcane juice contains three minerals, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus, in good amounts. Sugarcane juice contains the same amount of carbohydrates as 100 grams of flour, the difference is that all the carbs in sugarcane juice are sugar. But sugarcane juice contains much more. Anti-inflammatory compounds such as alpha hydroxy acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid, and quercetin are found in sugarcane juice. In addition, sugarcane juice takes up a lot of space in the stomach. It also contains some fiber.
Sugar is pure sugar. If you remove everything from sugarcane juice, all that is left is sugar. So anyway, let's get to the point. It is not the same to eat a little sugarcane juice every day for four or five months of the year and seven or eight pounds of sugar throughout the year. Plus, our ancestors did not eat exclusively carbs like us. If there is someone over 80 years old in someone's house, ask them how much fish, pulses, vegetables, fruits they ate. Along with that, they ate a lot of brown rice, clean water and air.
What do we eat? In Bangladesh, white rice and flour together cause more harm than sugar alone. But, that does not mean that eating sugar is justified. To learn about sugar, you can read either of James Walvin's 'Sugar' or John Yudkin's 'Pure, White and Deadly' books. So what do we do?? We will reduce sugar, if possible, we will eliminate it. If it does not work at all, we will eat jaggery or brown sugar. The best thing is if we start using stevia.
