When NASA's Voyager spacecraft reach the heliopause — the outermost boundary of our solar system — they enter an extremely hot region that scientists call the "wall of fire."

Temperatures in this region reach about 30,000 to 50,000 Kelvin (54,000–90,000°F). Here, the solar wind, a stream of charged particles that emerges from the Sun, collides with the interstellar medium — the thin gas and dust that surrounds the stars. These powerful collisions superheat the particles, creating a fiery boundary that marks the outer limits of the Sun's influence.

Despite the extreme temperatures, the Voyager spacecraft did not overheat because the density of particles is so low that there are not enough collisions to significantly heat the spacecraft. Crossing this “wall of fire” is not just a scientific achievement — it is humanity’s first step into interstellar space, where our familiar solar bubble ends and the mysterious frontier of a vast, unknown galaxy begins.
