As men age, the rate of accumulation of new genetic mutations (de novo mutations) in their sperm cells increases significantly. The main reason is selfish sperm. An important process behind this increase in mutations is selfish sperm selection. Advantages of mutations Some mutations are created in sperm-producing cells (spermatogonial stem cells), which give those cells a competitive edge to multiply faster or survive than other healthy cells.
