Mass Celebration Of Ice Hockey World Championship

I was curious to see what was going on at the old ice hall where there was a stage on which the team appeared for the public. I took some shots.

It was about 8 pm and the celebrations were about to end. I'm glad I didn't come any earlier because the noise was deafening. The volume of the music was almost unbearable to me despite my standing 100 m from the speakers.

The venue was the old ice hall.

I remember watching a game in an world championship tournament in the early 80s as a child here (1982 in fact). It was between Canada and Italy. The result was 3-3. At least one of the goals scored by Italy was scored by Roberto "Bob" De Piero. That name has stuck to my mind. It is just about the only thing I remember about the game. I had to look up the result as well as the exact year.

My father took me to the game. I liked watching and playing ice hockey back then. He would also take me to local basketball games. I was never as much of a fan of basketball but I often tagged along because of the ice cream I got during the halftime.

I think the end has just been announced. But some of the team members are still on stage. The cardboard figure is of Kalervo Kummola, a notable figure particularly in the International Ice Hockey Federation as well as Tampere local politics to a lesser degree. The fact that he was born and raised in Turku, a bitter rival of Tampere, has not hurt his popularity in Tampere. He played as a goalie in a lower level series in 1960s but soon discovered his talent for organizing.
