My Actifit Report Card: July 2 2023 & clean your city effort

Even though the weather was warm and sunny on the 1st of July, an unexpected overnight rain shower gave the ground a chance to absorb some much-needed water. This change of plans led me to explore the city on my bike instead of hitting the trails. Little did I know that this decision would lead to a series of unexpected adventures and encounters throughout the day.

I started my day earlier as usual, preparing a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a refreshing cup of peppermint tea.

The sandwich had a unique twist, as it was made with buns from a local bakery, generously covered with cheese. These buns were often leftover, and I was lucky enough to receive them from my neighbor, who worked as a baker. With my breakfast in hand, I hopped on my bike and embarked on my city exploration.

First, I stumbled upon a discarded (Störtebeker)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_St%C3%B6rtebeker] beer bottle and a plastic bottle. Störtebeker was I german pirate in the 14th century. Recognizing their redeemable value, I placed them in my backpack for recycling later on.

My first stop was at the local soccer field, where I expected to find newly littered debris. To my surprise, there were only a few cigarette butts scattered around. I promptly picked them up and disposed of them properly.

Undeterred, I continued my journey, eager to see what else awaited me.

At the local market square was abuzz with preparations for a monster truck show, but was still early so no one was in sight.

The show would be a hit among the local children. Seizing the opportunity, I snapped some pictures of the impressive vehicles before the crowds arrived.

At a bus stop further to the city city adorned with flower buckets, I noticed that they had become filled with litter.

Determined to keep the city clean, I happily removed larger debris from the buckets. To properly dispose of the cigarette butts inside, I decided to wait for drier conditions, as I didn't want to ruin my bike gloves.

This incident reminded me of the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations. Next time I will bring old gloves for such occasions.

Continuing my journey, I encountered numerous redeemable bottles along the way and statues.

By the time I reached the city center market square, my backpack was filled to the brim with these recyclables.

Since supermarkets in Germany are closed on Sundays, I made a mental note to redeem them the following day. Interestingly, I noticed a hotel with a logo similar to that of Hive, sparking my curiosity about possible variations.

There was a lot of loot.

Before attending church, I took some time to read Steven Pinker's "Enlightenment Now." The book served as a motivating force, encouraging me to focus on the positive aspects of life. After church, I visited my mother and enjoyed a delightful meal together, cherishing the time spent with her. In the evening, I took her dog for a walk, taking the opportunity to rid the local streets and forest paths of newly spawned cigarette butts.

What started as a change of plans due to rain turned into an eventful day full of unexpected adventures and encounters. From discovering littered debris and redeemable bottles to capturing moments of excitement and enjoying quality time with loved ones, this day taught me the importance of being open to new experiences and making a positive impact on the environment.
