Notomabuya Frenata -- Lagartija De Cristal -- The Bridled Skink

Just in time to NOT get stomped on or worse still munched on by a pupper...I found this guy on my floor last night. The temp. having dropped to zero celcius, he couldn't move but he was alive. I know because as soon as he warmed up just a little bit on my hand, he grabbed onto my hand with those cute little clawsypaws and didn't want to let go.

Knowing that I could only put him someplace safe until the sun was up high enough in the morning, I placed him on a shelf where the dogs wouldn't notice. This morning he went out onto this fence post and lifted his head for a second before I had to take off for the day. I wish i could have checked up on him later...well.

This species can be confused with a few other types of skink (in the scincideae family) commonly found in the same regions of Paraguay, Brasil, Bolivia and Argentina. Honestly, it is a bit challenging to distinguish which are which.

Skinks are special to me, (like every little to the littlest of beasts, fine, it's true.) connected to a memory of one of my first scientific adventures as a little girl. I wish that I still had the drawings that I made of the little dude I found under a rock in Bovina Center, NY.

In Argentina they are sometimes known as, "Mother of Vipers." Local lore here applies this name also "mbói sy," in Guaraní, to praying mantis who are sadly often murdered due to a false belief that they have a deadly poisonous bite. I've tried to disprove this by walking around with a mantis friend who landed on my shoulder.

Justo a tiempo para que NO lo pisotearan o, peor aún, se lo comiera un cachorro... Anoche encontré a este pequeño en el suelo. La temperatura había bajado a cero grados centígrados, no podía moverse, pero estaba vivo. Lo sé porque, en cuanto se calentó un poco en mi mano, se agarró a ella con sus lindas patitas y no quería soltarla.

Sabiendo que solo podía ponerlo en un lugar seguro hasta que el sol estuviera lo suficientemente alto por la mañana, lo coloqué en un estante donde los perros no lo notarían. Esta especie se puede confundir con otros tipos de lagartijas (de la familia Scincidae) que se encuentran comúnmente en las mismas regiones de Paraguay, Brasil, Bolivia y Argentina. Sinceramente, es un poco difícil distinguir cuáles son cuáles.

Las lagartijas son especiales para mí (como todos los animales pequeños, bueno, es verdad), ya que están relacionados con uno de mis primeros recuerdos científicos cuando era niña. Ojalá aún conservara los dibujos que hice del pequeño animalito que encontré debajo de una roca en Bovina Center, Nueva York.

En Argentina, a veces se les conoce como «madre de víboras». La tradición local también aplica este nombre, «mbói sy» en guaraní, a las mantis religiosas, que lamentablemente suelen ser asesinadas debido a la falsa creencia de que tienen un veneno mortal. He intentado refutar esto paseándome con una mantis amiga que se posó en mi hombro.
