A memorable interhouse sports competition

All play and no work they say makes jack a dull boy.

For this reason, all nursery, primary and secondary schools over here in Nigeria do embark on what we call interhouse sports competition. In this post I'll be sharing the experiences and memories I had in the recent interhouse sports competition I took part in as a house mistress while carrying out my teaching practice exercise in one of the prominent secondary schools here in Nigeria.

During Interhouse sports competition, pupils or students are usually splitted or shared proportionally into different groups. Now these groups are usually being differentiated by a unique name or colour. So in this competition there were 8 houses namely white, blue, red, purple, green, orange, pink and Yellow and I happened to be the house mistress in yellow house.

A day was fixed for the interhouse sports competition and preparations started immediately. Students were shared and splitted into different houses, houses masters and mistress were also choosed by the school's sports director.

After school, students and staffs do come back for practice in the evening everyday and the students performed perfectly well. I liked the fact that they were really committed, focused and hard-working.

The D-Day came finally, it was on a Thursday, the weather was quite beautiful and sunny, the D-J and everything was set especially the item 6😁, the students, the staffs, parents, friends and everyone were ready as well.

The students were well dressed in their different sports wear, they were all looking beautiful and sweet especially the house queens and Kings. The teachers, staffs, parents, friends and even the student teachers were not exempted, everything was just colourful.

The opening prayer was said and the event was declared open by the school's principal. The students matched out and stood in the field, they saluted the principal and everyone and the national anthem was sang.

Immediately after that, the competition started, the students ran 100, 200, 400 and 1500 meters both boys and girls in different houses. They also did relay race and they performed very well, my house was amongst the top🤗.

I can remember that the principal and the staffs ran too, the funny thing was that, the principal was placed at the front while others were at the back. The man was quite old Sha, so he was placed at the front because everyone knew that there's no how he was going to win if he was at the back. When he heard "ready go", he quickly ran and reached the finishing line and immediately he was announced the winner😂. Everybody laughed and laughed and laughed.

We the students teachers and the Corp members also ran too. Along the line, I fell down, everyone laughed, I couldn't even run again, I struggled to reach the finishing line. It was really funny.

The students also displayed cultural dance and showed their different dancing steps. Dancing and running was the only activity done that day. However, other activities like long jump, sack race, javelin, shot put and discus were done during the rehearsals they do have in the evening after school.

Blue house took the 1st position, yellow house took 2nd position and white house took 3rd position. Not that other houses didn't do well, they did well, but you know in competition there must be a winner.

I can recall that I tried to do the sac race and I ended up falling down as tall as I am😂. Everyone laughed at me. It was indeed a memorable experience and I won't forget it in a hurry. I really had fun and I enjoyed myself as well.

I'll miss them when I leave i.e when I'm done with my teaching practice exercise.

While I was in secondary school, I was in green house. It was fun and we even had to build tents.
